I am filing this complaint regarding a serious engine defect in my 2016 Ford Edge equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. The vehicle has approximately 71,521 miles and still has its original engine. A Ford dealership inspected and diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed coolant intrusion into the engine. The dealership recommended replacing the engine long block, which represents a major engine repair at relatively low mileage. Despite the dealership's confirmed diagnosis, Ford has not offered to cover the cost of the repair and expects me to pay for the engine replacement myself. I am concerned about the safety and reliability of this engine defect. Coolant intrusion can lead to engine misfires, loss of power, stalling, and potentially complete engine failure while driving. A sudden loss of power in traffic or at highway speeds could create a dangerous situation for the driver, passengers, and other motorists. I believe this serious engine problem warrants further investigation, particularly given the vehicle's mileage, the confirmed dealership diagnosis, and the substantial cost of the required repair. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this engine issue and determine whether additional safety action is warranted. I also request that Ford review this failure and consider covering the cost of the necessary engine replacement.

Hello, I'm on permanent disability and this my only car. it started with noticing white smoke coming out of the exhaust and a sweet smell. also noticed the coolant getting low and had to keep adding more in with no visible leaks. I pulled cylinder one plug and put a bore a scope down it and found a crack in the cylinder wall. I found a web site that said there was a class action law suite miller vs. ford for this issue, it told me to call these two dealer ships Ted Russel Ford and Ray Cunningham Ford to have my car fixed free of charge. The web site told me if they said no, to contact NHTSA and file a complaint. I also called NHTSA they told me to contact the state attorney office they suggested to also file a complaint to the state, and I did that. I found this information below that looks like the issue. NHTSA ID Number: 10214126 Manufacturer Communication Number: TSB 22-2229 Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I own a 2016 Ford Edge with the 2.0 ecoboost engine and have problems with it burning antifreeze for quite some time. The first time it happened I was getting on the interstate and the temp gage went up and the vehicle went into limp mode. I have been driving around with the coolant recovery reservoir cap loose for quite some time now to keeping it from pressurizing the cooling system. I read the article regarding this issue on MSN and decided to register a complaint. I'm a retired mechanic and have been told by a lot of other mechanics that this has been an issue for sometime. Thanks for looking into this issue!

My 2016 Ford Edge equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine developed a check engine light and began producing white smoke from the exhaust after sitting overnight. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Ford dealership for diagnosis. The Ford technician performed a self-test and found diagnostic trouble codes P0304 and P0316 stored in the PCM. The dealer pressure-tested the cooling system, removed the cylinder 4 spark plug for inspection, and confirmed coolant intrusion into cylinder 4. The dealer then searched Ford's OASIS system and identified Ford TSB 22-2229, which calls for replacement of the engine long block for this condition. The dealership has recommended long-block engine replacement at a cost of approximately $7,800. The vehicle has approximately 127,700 miles. I am concerned that coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber can result in misfires, rough engine operation, overheating, engine damage, and potential loss of engine power while the vehicle is being driven. This failure appears consistent with the coolant-intrusion condition involving 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine that is currently being evaluated by NHTSA under Defect Petition DP26008. Ford has advised me that coverage for this condition is limited to 7 years/100,000 miles and has declined coverage because the vehicle exceeds that mileage. The failed engine/vehicle is currently available for inspection at the Ford dealership.

We had rough idling for a couple days followed by excessive white smoke one morning upon starting the vehicle and the check engine light came on. We immediately noticed the coolant was low, so it got topped off and then we took it to the dealer. They diagnosed the engine coolant intrusion in cylinder 4. Had we not added coolant the engine could have seized and created an accident or caused a fire. We received an $8,200 estimate for installing a new long block. Ford is giving zero assistance on this because the vehicle is more than 7 years old (oddly, Ford started putting in a different design 2.0L engine 7 years ago). This vehicle is in mint condition, only 65,000 miles and had all service done by the dealer more frequently than the service manual indicates.

At approximately 110,000 miles, my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine developed a rough-start/rough-running condition. The vehicle was diagnosed with coolant entering cylinder #2. I had not noticed an obvious coolant-loss problem before the condition was diagnosed. Ford TSB 19-2346, dated December 19, 2019, addresses coolant intrusion into the cylinders on 2015–2018 Ford Edge vehicles equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. The bulletin describes possible rough running, white exhaust smoke and/or low coolant, and provides for long-block replacement when the specified conditions are present. I am concerned that this condition could result in engine misfire, loss of engine power, or engine failure while driving, creating a safety risk. My vehicle has an extensive documented service history with the original selling dealer, including repeated multi-point inspections and maintenance. The vehicle has now experienced the coolant-intrusion condition addressed by Ford TSB 19-2346. I understand that NHTSA has opened Defect Petition DP26008 concerning alleged coolant intrusion and loss of motive power involving 2015–2018 Ford Edge vehicles equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. I request that NHTSA consider my complaint and vehicle history as part of its evaluation of DP26008 and investigate whether this condition represents a safety-related defect. “My vehicle was originally purchased from Dave Sinclair Ford in St. Louis County, Missouri, and has an extensive documented service history with that dealership, including repeated multi-point inspections and maintenance.”

On September 23, 2026, while driving my 2016 Ford Edge SEL with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, the engine temperature began rising into the overheating range. The temperature fluctuated while the vehicle was moving and returned closer to normal when stopped. I checked the coolant and found it very low. Approximately 3/4 gallon of coolant was added. After driving approximately 20 miles, the temperature gauge remained normal. By September 25, the coolant reservoir was again nearly empty, indicating substantial coolant loss. The vehicle has also had a check-engine light for several months, a previously identified misfire code, and has recently been shaking/rough-running when started. I am concerned that continued coolant loss and overheating could cause the engine to overheat or fail while the vehicle is being driven, creating a safety risk to the occupants and other motorists. There has been no crash, fire, or injury. The cause of the coolant loss has not yet been confirmed because repairs have not yet been completed. The vehicle is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives regarding this issue.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while shifted to reverse(R), the back over prevention camera failed to provide an image and the screen was black. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V572000 (Back Over Prevention). The dealer was contacted and a mobile technician inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the vehicle with a module failure. The part was no longer in production, and the dealer was unable to confirm that the module failure would not return. The manufacturer was informed of the issue and confirmed that the module was no longer in production and that the module replacement was not covered under the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

I'm reporting a severe, well-documented manufacturing defect involving my 2016 Ford Edge with 2.0L EcoBoost engine. The vehicle has been losing radiator coolant constantly with no external puddles or leaks visible. Upon morning cold starts, the vehicle shakes, runs extremely rough and experiences severe engine misfires due to coolant intruding into the combustion cylinders overnight. This internal coolant leak defect caused ignition coil and spark plug failure. This structural defect creates a critical safety hazard. The coolant intrusion has caused the engine to stumble and threatens a total loss of motive power and engine stalling while operating in traffic, creating an imminent risk of a rear-end collision. This vehicle matches the exact failure profile detailed in Ford's Technical Service Bulletin TSB 19-2346 regarding structural engine block coolant intrusion. I'm filing this complaint to support the ongoing federal defect investigation for the Ford EcoBoost coolant intrusion issue and urge NHTSA to mandate a safety recall, as this engineering flaw creates a dangerous driving condition. Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter. I look forward to receiving a response.

Vehicle suffered internal engine failure due to the known 2.0L EcoBoost manufacturing flaw where coolant bleeds into the cylinders. Experienced severe engine misfires, rough idling, and sudden risk of stalling in traffic. Ford dealership diagnosed the vehicle as needing a complete engine block replacement at a cost of $14,000. Because no safety recall or financial assistance has been offered by Ford despite an active NHTSA evaluation on this exact defect, I have been forced to temporarily use a chemical sealant block sealer (K-Seal) to keep the vehicle operable

I took my car in early XXX as I was planning on taking a long drive to visit family in [XXX] to fix the ac belt and regular preventative maintenance. I was driving eastbound on the XXX headed back to my home in [XXX] when I experienced sudden loss of power. At the time, I was traveling roughly 65mph and my car suddenly slowed to 35mph. This posed a serious safety hazard to myself and other vehicles traveling on the interstate. My check engine light came on. I took it to Ford after my trip and described everything that occurred. They had my vehicle for a week and could not recreate the issue nor found anything wrong. My check engine light turned off prior to taking it in after my experience and there was nothing for them to read or go off of other than my account of the incident. I had to rent a car during the week they had my vehicle. I continued to drive since nothing could be found and it is my day-to-day vehicle. I experienced rough idling on cold start and even more loss of power on my daily drive to and from work in the city. My check engine light came back on, and I immediately took it to Auto Zone to get the codes read and report it back to Ford. The codes came back as P0301 and P0299, misfire on cylinder 1 and turbo underboost condition. We made an appointment on the following Monday for my car to be seen. Ford diagnosed my car with coolant intrusion and a sticking waste gate on turbo, requiring a new engine and turbo with a verbal estimate of $10-$15k. I now have to replace my car. This defect poses an immediate safety hazard, as the fluid intrusion causes rough idling, and a sudden, hazardous loss of motor power while operating at driving speeds. This complaint is being filed in direct relation to the active NHTSA Defect Petition DP26008 investigating 2015–2018 Ford Edge vehicles for engine failures caused by this specific coolant intrusion flaw.
