The root cause of the "Noise when turning the steering wheel" is identified as wire harness interference. Specifically, a wire harness within the steering wheel assembly may be incorrectly positioned, leading to contact and noise during steering operations.

Diagnosis

To diagnose this issue, a technician will turn the steering wheel from full stop to the left and right five times, listening for the characteristic noise. If the noise is present, the repair procedure outlined in TSB 08-251-24 REV. A is initiated. If no noise is heard, the bulletin is considered completed for that vehicle.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair for the Jeep Compass steering wheel noise involves repositioning the steering wheel wire harness. The general steps are:

1. Cycle the steering wheel fully left and right five times to confirm the noise.
2. If noise is present, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable for safety.
3. Remove the Driver Air Bag (DAB) module. Technicians will refer to detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/Service Library under "Service Info> 4110A11 - Volante - remocao/recolocacao para versoes com air bag."
4. Locate the steering wheel wire harness and correct its position to prevent interference. Figure 1 in the TSB illustrates the incorrect and correct positioning of the wire harness.
5. After repositioning, turn the steering wheel full left and right again to confirm the noise has been eliminated.
6. Reinstall the Driver Air Bag (DAB) module, again following the detailed service procedures.
7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
