Symptoms of Crank Gear Flange Dislocation

Owners of affected Jeep Compass vehicles may observe one or more of the following issues:

  • "Vehicle does not start due to crank gear flanged dislocated."
  • "Abnormal noise from the engine compartment."
  • "Noise from the timing cover area."

These symptoms indicate a potential issue with the crank gear flange, which can prevent the engine from operating correctly.

Cause of the Issue

The root cause of the crank gear flange dislocation is identified as a manufacturing issue. This defect can lead to the timing belt losing its correct position, impacting engine function.

Important Warnings for Owners

  • Parts Replacement: The dealer will only replace listed parts if damage is found during the repair procedure. This prevents unnecessary replacements.
  • Timing Belt Removal: Technicians are advised, "Do not remove the timing belt after removing the cover." This highlights a critical step to avoid further complications during the repair.
  • Puma Bolt Spacer Orientation: It is crucial to "Ensure that the Puma bolt spacer butt on the cylinder head is positioned correctly" during the repair process to ensure proper function.

Diagnosis and Applicability

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 09-014-24 REV. A has also been released as Rapid Service Update (RSU) 24-090. To determine if your vehicle is affected, a dealer can check your VIN in the VIP system or the RSU VIN list. Even if your VIN is not on the list, the repair procedure should be performed if your 2023-2024 Jeep Compass exhibits any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair process for the Jeep Compass crank flange dislocation involves a detailed inspection and potential replacement of engine components. Technicians will begin by removing the air cleaner and fuel filter to access the engine's timing components. The upper timing cover bolts are then removed, and the upper timing belt cover is discarded.

Next, the Puma bolt is loosened and then tightened to 14 N·m (123 in. lbs.), ensuring the Puma bolt spacer is correctly oriented on the cylinder head. The mounting bolt is then installed and tightened to 50 N·m (37 ft. lbs.).

The engine is rotated 360 degrees, and the belt position gap from the cam gear face to the belt face is measured using a Vernier Caliper. If this gap is more than 3 mm (0.1 in.), the timing belt will be removed and reinstalled. The engine is rotated again, and the gap is rechecked. If the gap remains over 3 mm, the tensioner bracket assembly will be replaced. Finally, the timing cover, fuel filter, and air cleaner are reinstalled, with the timing cover bolts tightened to 9 N·m (80 in. lbs.).
