This technical service bulletin, S1408000384 REV. J, provides crucial information for diagnosing and resolving these issues, emphasizing that unnecessary Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) replacement should be avoided.

Symptoms

Drivers might observe one or more of the following indicators related to an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) issue:

• "Start Stop Charging Warning Lamp Illuminated On"
• "Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) State of Charge (SOC) Inaccurate"
• "Battery Charging Message"
• "Battery Warning Lamp On"
• Presence of IBS related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

These symptoms, including the Alfa Romeo Tonale IBS fault, suggest a potential problem with how the vehicle's battery management system is monitoring and charging the battery.

Important Warnings for Owners and Technicians

Stellantis has issued specific warnings to prevent misdiagnosis and incorrect repairs:

• "IBS DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH NEW OR RECHARGED BATTERIES." However, it might require new SOC adaptation.
• "DO NOT remove IBS to charge the battery."
• "DO NOT BLIND CHARGE" — Charging directly to the battery pole, bypassing the IBS, can lead to inaccurate readings and further issues.

Fault Codes / DTCs

The following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may be set by the Body Control Module (BCM) in relation to IBS issues:

Diagnosis and Repair for DTC B2193

If an active DTC B2193 is observed, follow these steps:

1. Reset the IBS by cycling its 2-way connection.
2. Start the vehicle and wait approximately 30 seconds to see if the DTC clears or changes to a stored DTC.
3. If the fault is no longer active, the existing IBS is likely functioning correctly and does not need replacement.
4. If an active DTC B2193 persists, then replace the IBS.

Diagnosis and Repair for DTC U113E

An active DTC U113E indicates a defect in the LIN bus, which the BCM uses to monitor IBS data when the ignition is ON. This issue can stem from a LIN-bus wiring problem (short, open circuit, blown IBS fuse) or, less commonly, an internal IBS or BCM hardware/software fault.

To inspect the root cause of a U113E DTC:

1. Read vehicle DTCs with the ignition ON.
2. Wiggle the IBS 2-way harness takeout (LIN and IBS feed takeout) and monitor the state of DTC U113E. If this affects U113E behavior, the issue is likely harness-related.
3. Verify power to the IBS by back-probing pin 2 ("RD" wire) of the IBS 2-way connector. If voltage is below 11.8V, address low battery conditions first.
4. Verify the IBS feed fuse state and replace if necessary.
5. Verify LIN bus activity using a Mopar scope. Configure the scope for LIN monitoring if possible. Only replace the IBS if LIN diagnostics confirm it's the source of the problem.

IBS SOC Adaptation (Learning)

For the IBS to accurately learn the battery's State of Charge (SOC), a specific adaptation process is required:

• For Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles without an external charger, learning requires one engine crank followed by 2-4 hours of quiescent/sleep time. The quiescent/sleep time is defined by battery current between -500mA and 50mA.
• If SOC is inaccurate after using an external charger or in Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) applications, IBS SOC learning can take up to 2 days.
• If there's uncertainty about quiescent state current, disconnect the vehicle ground cable from the IBS to ensure no current flows through the battery during the learning period. The IBS's 2-way connection and clamp connection to the battery negative post must remain connected for the IBS to operate. Reconnect the ground cable to the IBS after the quiescent state is complete. For proper readings, all current flowing through the battery must pass through the IBS during normal operation.

Proper Battery Charging

Incorrect battery charging can lead to IBS issues, including the Alfa Romeo Tonale IBS fault. To ensure proper charging:

• Always charge through the IBS or by connecting the negative clamp to the body/engine ground.
• Avoid "blind charging" by placing the negative clamp directly on the battery pole, as this bypasses the IBS's sensing capabilities.

If your 2024-2026 Stellantis vehicle is displaying any of the described symptoms or DTCs, it is recommended to visit an authorized Stellantis service center. Technicians will utilize TSB S1408000384 REV. J to properly diagnose and address the issue, ensuring correct IBS function and battery health.
