On multiple occasions while using Apple CarPlay with navigation mapping active on my phone, the infotainment/display screen abruptly shuts off and fails to reconnect entirely until I come to a complete stop and open the driver-side door. This glitch is not merely an inconvenience; it presents a severe safety hazard. Recently, this exact failure occurred while I was navigating through complex multiple intersections, causing me to lose all display guidance and nearly resulting in a serious accident.

Months ago I heard a knocking noise under my steering wheel/near the driver's side wheel. I took the car in and reported what I was hearing. I had services completed but it didn't stop the noise. The noise was inconsistent and hard to duplicate for the dealership on test drives. It was most pronounced when going over speed bumps or turning the wheel when parking. The dealership did all they could do and provided great services replacing/fixing anything that could cause the issue to no avail. They assured me the vehicle was safe to drive even though the noise remained so I drove it. About a week ago, I had an error light come on and the car started to shut off without warning. The error said auto shut/off was disabled due to an engine issue - but no check engine light. I was almost rear ended twice when slowing the car down at a red light due to the car shutting off without warning when driving under 5-10mph or parking. I scheduled an appointment to take the car back in to address the error. Before the appointment, the car registered a check engine light. I called back and the dealership allowed me to bring the car in right away. The diagnosis stated I needed a few things, but specifically a new steering rack. They said there was "wear" on the rack but didn't provide any additional details (car has 121k miles). I called VW to inquire on potential recalls and learned about the steering rack mount/assembly (i forget exact terminology) recall but was informed the actual steering rack was not in the recall. I recited the symptoms I was reporting to the dealership months ago to the rep (case 07823488 and 07825005) and confirmed those are the symptoms listed in the recall but only for the mount. VW should have the entire steering rack and assembly covered in a recall because damage/wear to an assembly can put stress on the full rack causing a safety issue. Thank goodness my kids and I were not rear-ended by the auto shutoff but it could have been worse.

Backup camera screen and all related screen safety features unexpectedly stopped working. Safety features including backup / rear facing camera, parking assist, and blind spot warnings no longer function and put people and property at risk while maneuvering the vehicle. There was/is no warning that the systems do not work. Additionally, the health of children in the backseat is at risk as there is no way to control heating and cooling for backseat passengers. The failure to use safety equipment was confirmed by Ken Ganley North Olmstead VW dealership service department. Service department staff acknowledged other VW Atlas customers with similar problems. I was proceding through an intersection when my car's automatic braking system activated with no warning or reason. I was driving on [XXX] on [XXX] at around [XXX]. I was stopped at a red-light behind another vehicle waiting for the light to change. When the light changed green, I proceded to drive forward through the intersection with about a car distance between the car in front of me. As soon as I cleared the intersection, my car suddenly stopped and made a loud noise while it slid forward. Unsure of what had happened, I looked around and saw nothing in the road or around my car. My car had suddenly jerked as if I hit or ran a large object over. After observing my surroundings for causes of what had just happened, I looked down at my dash and saw the red foward collision warning icon lit up on my dash. I noticed it for a few seconds before the car released and I was able to continue proceding forward. I am not sure of my exact rate of speed, but I am guessing it was around 25mph. In my experience with the car, when the front collision warning system activates, there is an audible and visual warning with both an audible chime and bright red car icon on the dash alerting me to brake. Neither or these occurred before my car quickly and unexpectedly slammed on its brakes. Thankfully nothing came out of this experience except for rattled nerves from both me & my passengers. The car behind me was keeping a safe distance from my car and was able to brake safely. I was also able to keep control of my inoperable car through the busy intersection. If in other circumstances such as if the weather had been different, I could have very well have been involved in a car accident. As this happened last night, I have not taken my car to the dealer to be inspected. I have had issues with the warning system coming on without reason in the past, but this is the first time the car has done an unsafe maneuver like this. My car is available for inspection INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U
