I was driving my 2021 Honda CR-V vehicle at residential speed (exact speed unknown). Car suddenly stopped in street causing me to jerk forward in driver seat. As the car stopped, I saw the orange BRAKE symbol appear in front dash. I was accelerating at time of incident. I was not using the brakes. I was injured with severe whiplash. Pain so severe that I also made an error with administration of a pain reliever when I arrived home. This put me and my passenger at risk due to the failure of what I learned was the CMBS in my vehicle. If another car was following too closely behind me at the time the car abruptly stopped, this could have been a more serious accident. This incident happened today 11/22/2023 at approximately 11:30 am EST. I have not had an opportunity to contact the dealer as I have been in pain since it happened. Also, a few weeks ago, I noticed the BRAKE symbol appeared while driving while accelerating. The car jerked but it did not fully stop. Date of that incident unknown. The car has not yet been inspected by anyone since today’s incident. I found information about the CMBS issue for my car type after searching for a known recall online this evening.

Around 6600 miles I started noticing the steering sticking and require more than normal force to move the wheel. At first this was noticable about 80% of the time when driving at highway speeds (~65mph). When you are going straight and have to make a slight adjustment to stay in the lane the wheel would "stick" or "lock" and require more force to get past the sticky point. This causes a small jerk when the wheel is released. After getting past that point the wheel felt normal. Over the past couple of months around (8000 miles) I started noticing it at slower speeds while in traffic (~45mph). No driving assistance features were turned on and there have been no warning lights. I have an appointment with my Honda dealership this week to have a look at it is happening more frequently. Not only does this make for a terrible driving experience, but the force required to unstick the wheel could cause the car to over adjust if not careful. Before posting here I have read multiple accounts of this same issue with the 2023 CRV Hybrid with some explaining that the dealer had to replace the steering gearbox and EPS motor assembly because the steering gearbox was found to have an internal malfunction.

The steering started sticking, jerking and making a popping noise about 5,000 miles and now at 6900 miles it is getting worse. When going straight it is the most noticeable as it feels like the steering binds and then when I adjust to the left or the right it frees up and jerks so that I have to overcompensate and then it jerks in the other direction. At speeds below 10 mph if I move the steering wheel left and right it makes a clunking sound. Randomly during a turn the steering sticks. All the above happens with the lane assist both on and off. When it got worse the dealer said it is the electronic power steering but the part is on back order so there is no immediate fix available.

Steering jerks at random, doing so more frequently during highway driving/higher speeds. This began when my vehicle hit ~10K miles and feels like it is progressively getting worse, requiring me to forcibly jerk the wheel back in order to stay within my driving lane. I did bring the vehicle to the dealer it was purchased at and they drove it 5 miles and said they could not duplicate the issue. I brought it to another Honda dealer who told me they would charge me to look into it, despite it being a safety issue in a new vehicle that is under warranty.

The steering wheel when driving gets difficult to turn, then abruptly gets easy to turn as if it is getting caught, or sticking. For example when driving straight, the wheel will not turn until you apply well over the normal force to turn the wheel. After applying this medium to heavy force to turn, the wheel ‘un-sticks’ and jerks abruptly, going back to normal force to turn. This unsettles the car and shifts the weight of the vehicle. This is dangerous especially in wet or icy conditions where these shifts are more likely to cause a loss of control. I am worried that this could get worse as the symptoms suddenly arose. This behavior is constantly noticeable while driving on the highway. It’s embarrassing to drive and other drivers or police officers may interpret the jerky driving as being under the influence. After bringing the car to a dealer, they confirmed the behavior on my vehicle as well as their test drive vehicle. There are no warning lights, and I first noticed the issue after 5-10k miles as it’s first owner.

For months, the infotainment screen has flashed on and off or delayed in coming on after vehicle has started. The delay would take minutes or hours and eventually became days. Now the screen has been completely blank for about two weeks now. You can hear the radio and adjust it with the steering wheel controls but cannot adjust it with the volume control on the infotainment center. CANNOT access any menus/apps nor make any adjustments to any safety equipment or vehicle settings. CANNOT turn the back seat reminder on when I put a child in the backseat. The back up camera does not work. I'm sure there are other safety concerns I cannot think of when not able to access certain menus or apps on the entertainment center.

- #11555059November 14, 2023STEERING, LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST
On or about October 18, 2023, while backing out of driveway, I heard a warning beep and a meesage popped up on the instument panel- Lane Keeping assist System malfunction, see your dealer. about that same time, my steering began to get a "sticky" feeling to it, as if the steering was hesitant to respond to slight movement of the steering wheel. This occurs after the vehicle has been on the road for 10 to 15 minutes. It will also stick whenever the vehicle is stopped for more than a few seconds (i.e, at a traffic light or stop sign). While driving on a highway in a straight line, the steering is also hesitant, as if momentarily "stuck". This will cause a "jerk" in the steering wheel. The problem has been persistent for a month now,and prio to this, the steering was very smooth and consistent for the first 9 months of operation. I bought this vehicle brand new from the dealer. I took it to the dealer I purchased it from, and they claimed they could not duplicate the problem. As soon as I departed the dealership, the problem was still there.

I was braking pulling forward into a parking place, going approximately 10 mph. The brakes did not work , the car accelerated jumped a curb ran over a parking sign and did not stop. I attempted to turn to the left on the island so as not to go into the busy street. I scraped/ran into a small tree while trying to put the car in park. I heard a large bang, 3 airbags deployed. I do not know if I ran over something, nothing was in my sight or view. Due to all of the smoke I quickly turned off the car and tried to get out. My left underside forearm had a 5”x3 1/2” bruise with swelling at the largest area and pain. The swelling is approximately 2 1/2” x2 1/2”. The mid to right side of my chest was injured extending to my right side with pain and bruising on and under my right breast. I went by ambulance to an ER. I am alarmed and traumatized. I have been experiencing lightheadedness since the accident. I have had headaches. The car took off as I was attempting to stop. I had NO control of the vehicle and could not bring it to a stop. There were no warning messages etc. If people were near or in front of me it would have been catastrophic, I had no control. There is a police report. My car is to be examined by the insurance company. My understanding is that it will be considered “totaled “. I reported the accident to Honda who I lease from. I was told that it could be “a software problem “. When the car malfunctioned I had just left my home , driving for the first time that day. My first stop was driving a couple of blocks to vote. I do not know how to upload pictures or the accident report. I have pictures of the car from the tow lot. After returning from the hospital I took pictures of the site to include the downed sign, damaged tree and broken car pieces in the driveway. I retrieved 2 large pieces of the car from the driveway.

- #11554068November 7, 2023SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
I was driving in the left lane of a two lane street. Due to construction, the right hand lane had orange construction barrels. All of a sudden, alarms went off, in RED LETTERS the word BRAKE! appeared on my dashboard and the car automatically braked - hard. There was no obstruction of any kind in my lane. All the items on my seats flew to the floor. The seat belt wrenched me back. I now have a mild sore shoulder, neck and back. If someone had been following me, they certainly would have hit me due to the sudden, unexplained stop. The incident was very shocking and scary, since there was no obstruction of any kind in my lane, it took me totally by surprise. As I travelled, I was in no danger. The only danger would be if I suddenly stopped, which my car automatically did! I will be sure to turn this "safety" feature off in the future. This was a failure of the automatic Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS). The system was activated when no danger was present. I did not contact a mechanic or the manufacturer, as I question whether my complaint would be taken seriously.

- #11553920November 7, 2023SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
I was in a dedicated lane to make a left turn. There was no vehicle in front of me and no pedestrians in the crosswalk. I was coasting to the light at about 20mph or less as I could see that it was red and because I am familiar with the intersection , I knew it would not turn green immediately. At 2 to 3 car lengths back from where I was going to stop all of a sudden the car jolted to a stop. The car immediately shut down (quit running). There was no car behind me or I am sure my car would have been rear ended. I got out of the car to see if there was something under it or if I could see if something had fallen off the underside of the car. I tried to restart the car but it would not start. By that time there were 2 cars behind me waiting to turn. I got out of the car and went back to the nearest car and told the driver she needed to go around my car. I got back into my car and tried to restart it and it started. I had absolutely no warning before this happened. I did not take the car for an inspection but I did call the salesman (as soon as I could). He said it might be because of the forward collision system and suggested that I could turn it off. He said that the system is very sensitive and even a leaf might set it off. Even though it was in October, it was not a windy day and most trees in my area had not started losing their leaves. I bought this car because of the safety equipment as I am [XXX] and in good health, but I am a practical person. I did tell the salesman that if there is another incident that I would be coming in for an inspection. I have been anxious about this and have learned others have had this problem. Primarily at higway speeds, there is a slight binding/resistance that has to be overcomed when making a small steering correction when turning the steering wheel slightly to the right. Dealer turned off all driving assisted computer programs and said problem fixed. The problem still exsists. The steering movement is no entirely free.

This issue happened immediately after buying the car. When I turn the steering wheel it makes a clicking sound. I brought it into Honda and they replaced a belt but the issue starting again within the hour. When I brought it back in I was told that they were able to find one video in the Honda service center with this issue. It turns out this happened with 2020-2024 Honda Civics which were recalled. I've contacted Honda 15 times with no reply. I have a complaint number, Fedexed and emailed leaders, emailed where I bought the car, etc.
