- #11567993January 26, 2024SERVICE BRAKES, ENGINE, SUSPENSION
I was in the driver's seat in one-pedal driving. The car was stopped. I attempted to move the vehicle up a few feet so the driver in the car behind could reach the microphone to order their meal. When I tapped the gas pedal, the car moved slightly, but the engine revved loudly and thoroughly; the iX50 then launched itself forward, and I applied the brake. The brake pedal went to the floor. The iX50 launched violently forward. It struck the stopped full-size SUV in the rear. That vehicle came to a stop, literally 20-25 feet forward. The iX50 then hit the steel pole there to protect the drive-thru window. The steel pole came entirely out of the ground. The BMW app on my phone generated a message that the iX50 had a brake failure, that the suspension was unstable, that the iX50 should not be driven, and that the wheels should be blocked so that it could not roll.

I a not certain how to report this incident but I received a text alert from a local car dealership that there was a vehicle recall of my front grill due to failure of a device that is supposed to unfreeze ice from that part which is experiencing a failure. Since this is a major BMW Dealership, I did not question the validity, I merely scheduled the repair. When I arrived there was no promised loaner car and I was angered that I had cleared my busy morning and there was no way I could also clear my afternoon to wait for my car so I ordered a Lyft to take me home. Then, I became suspicious when I was informed that they did an inspection of my 2022 vehicle and presented a list of repairs, I did no sign any authorizations allowing them to do anything to my vehicle. I told them to do only the recall repair and then I looked up my vin and became aware that there was no safety recall outstanding on my vehicle and never anything concerning icing of the grill. Now I need to pick my vehicle up and I am i fear of what they may have done to my vehicle.

Power loss, dash went black and loss of drive power. This failure has occurred twice and I more fully documented each failure to BMW. When was the last time this occurred? August 28th 2. GPS error, vehicle speed limit showed 25 under all conditions while actual speed showed correctly. When was the last time this occurred? Early August 3. Side collision system failures. Either fails entirely and indicates no vehicles on either side or will randomly indicate the presence of vehicles when they are not there. Other times it will function correctly. This has happened multiple times now. When was the last time this occurred? October 7th 4. Driver assistance errors pop as a multiple page error on the infotainment for no apparent reason a. On 217 an error message was displayed on the screen and heads up display saying Driver Assistance Limited. The message was longer but that’s all I could read driving in traffic. Conditions could not be more ideal and literally just left service with a freshly washed vehicle so not sure what the failure could be. I think this message is meant to occur if the cameras aren’t working or are obstructed by dirt, extreme weather etc. This message will display if the system has anything that prevents parameters from being met, this is something that will come up from time to time. 5. Assisted driving turned itself on and set a speed of 37 MPH When was the last time this occurred? August 5th 6. Automatic window stopped working despite the activation point still showing setup and active. Checked settings and tried it a few times and it just stopped working but settings look correct. It had previously been working. When was the last time this occurred? In the last week. 7. BMW assistant failures on about 3 of 4 commands. Only the mic button will activate the assistant as the voice activation stopped working. Making calls, navigation, turning off steering wheel heat, turning on massage seat all failed 1-3

The contact owns a 2022 BMW IX. The contact stated that the wife started the vehicle while parked in the garage. The wife exited the vehicle to retrieve an item and left the front driver's door open. Moments later the vehicle drove in reverse out of the garage and across the street and crashed into the neighbor's parked vehicle. The contact indicated that during the failure the collision avoidance system did not activate. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failures. The manufacturer was contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 16,000.

I brought a brand new BMW IX fully electric vehicle in May, 2023. A couple of weeks ago in early September, the “Emergency Call System Malfunction” warning light came on, and I can also smell a chemical burn from the vehicle. I dropped it off to Eastbay BMW in Pleasanton, California. 4350 Rosewood Drive, Pleasanton, California 94588. They confirmed that the “Control Module” may be over heating and causing the emergency call system to malfunction. Eastbay BMW contacted BMW HQ and was informed to just reset the warning light. “BMW advised Eastbay BMW that this is a recurring problem and the unit may overheat”. Eastbay BMW also confirmed that their technicians confirmed the warning codes showed the Control Module may be over heating. Instead of replacing this control module and finding a longer term fix, BMW HQ decided to decline replacement request and to simply reset the warning light until the next incident occurs. I have read on different BMW owners forums that this is an ongoing issue, occurring in many new vehicles as my BMW IX has less than 1,500 miles and we live in the Bay Area, California where it does not get too hot. Given that this relates to and impact the emergency call function, I want to file this formal complaint to ensure BMW address this issue properly and that the NHTSA launch a full investigation. Thank you

Issue 1- Car Starts to slowdown on its own when on self-drive mode on freeways – Has happened 3 X - service center has not be able to reproduce the error but many people on BMW forums has complained about the same in various driving conditions. Ours happened on a straight road with no car ahead of us but a car behind us which nearly caused an accident and a lot of anxiety . Our car went down from 70MPH to 40 and wouldn’t let me accelerate as well . Issue 2 - Front and Rear self-parking modes don’t work – Always have an error and goes in the wrong direction and doesn’t detect open spaces. For example it can’t decipher between grass and tarmac when the feature is being used in a driveway. Have recorded evidence and the BMW service station says the feature can’t be used on a driveway or garage- no documented evidence or information provided to us at the time of sale and till now . ( evidence of dealer notes also available) - Big safety issue as car goes on grass, hits garage walls, is reversing on side walks Issue 3 Reverse assisted parking doesn’t work flawlessly – even with the foot of the pedal it continues to speed and go fast - don’t think the service center even tried to duplicate this issue. All three are safety concerns for me and my family and is unacceptable. We have video recordings of the last two issues and screenshots are attached . The same have been shared with BMW but no one seems to care

On 9/6/2023 I arrived home at [XXX] around 3:30 pm. I stopped the car and put the car in "Park". Immediately car moved with full force like a rocket and hit the garage wall head on. Car got stalled, while this happened I still had my seat belt on. I was able to reverse the car about 5 feet and put back in park but I was not able to shut off the car engine manually. I have been using the wallet key on my apple phone. That also failed to stop the engine of the car. Then I went inside the house and brought the physical key and it was able to shut the engine off. - #11540108August 22, 2023ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, STEERING
The vehicle automatically lost power, shut down, and came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. During the shut down, I was unable to accelerate, brake, or steer the vehicle to the side of the road to a safe stopping location. The vehicle computer appeared to take over and shut down the vehicle and I was unable to stop it from happening. I was informed by the dealer that the issue was with the Combined Charging Unit. The vehicle has been back at the dealer since July 17, 2023 and I do not know if the Combined Charging Unit is still on the vehicle and available for inspection. There was a recall for a software update that was supposed to address a known issue with loss of power. Prior to this incident, that software update had been completed for this vehicle. Our safety and the safety of others was put at risk because our vehicle lost power and came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. I was unable to control the vehicle or get to a safe stopping place after the issue started. This could have caused a serious and potentially fatal accident had our vehicle been hit. I do not know if the issue has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle and vehicle component have been inspected by the Service Department at the dealer where we purchased the vehicle. I do not know of inspection by any other party. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Once the vehicle began to shut down, a message came up stating that the vehicle was shutting down. The vehicle also automatically called BMW Emergency Services and a representative came on asking if we had been in a crash or needed assistance.

When overtaking a car on a freeway that is on my right side, occasionally the car, without warning and with no information displayed, my car will suddenly brake for no reason about 3 to 5 mph. I use the accelerator pedal immediately to return to the original speed. This has happened maybe 8 or 10 times. The car has 14,000 miles on it. My wife will not allow me to use the adaptive cruise control when she is in the car as she gets scared when the car suddenly brakes. She is afraid their may be a car behind that might hit us. I have not reported this to BMW.

I parked my car in my single car garage, opened the driver's door and left the vehicle. Car is supposed to go into "park" automatically. Went around the car, opened the trunk and the right rear door to get something large out of the trunk. As I was standing behind the car, the car suddenly starting moving toward me. I ran and the open R. rear door jammed against the right side of garage, at the garage door level, and stopped the car. I went into the car and found the car in neutral. I was nearly killed. For the rest of the day the car ceased to go into "park" automatically, as it was supposed to. This happened yesterday. Today the car is working normally (i.e. it goes into "park" automatically when I open the driver's door and emerge from the car.

I was traveling on 6/12 at approximately 4:30 AM at around 65 MPH when I received a warning message something to the effect of “emergency system malfunction - vehicle will now stop”. I lost all throttle and the vehicle slowed to a stop. Due to the lack of other vehicles present at the time, I was able to get to the side of the road before the vehicle completely stopped. I restarted the vehicle and it seemed to operate normally, but I took the vehicle to the service center to diagnose the problem because it could have caused a serious accident in heavier traffic. When I checked the vehicle in, the service advisor stated that it seemed like a serious issue and they would want to get BMW involved directly, but when they had it “ready” for me two days later, all they had done is attempt to pull trouble codes and couldn’t tell me if it was safe to drive or not. They did provide me a loaner at the time and I have attempted to get the dealership to diagnose this issue, but to date they have not provided me with any information about it after having the vehicle for about one week. I contacted BMW North America Customer Relations and explained the problems with the dealership and asked about the mechanical failure and whether I should be concerned/take it to another dealership/etc. They stated that they don’t get involved with the dealership service departments and were generally unhelpful. I stressed that this could be a serious safety issue, but I didn’t get the sense they were interested in getting to the bottom of what happened and whether it was in fact a serious safety issue.

The contact owns a 2023 BMW IX. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power. During the failure, the message "Malfunction, Pull Over" was displayed. Approximately 20 minutes later, the contact was able to restart the vehicle however, moments later while driving the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who indicated that the failure was due to an undetermined High Voltage Battery malfunction. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 30.
