Why this program matters
In recent years, a global semiconductor shortage significantly impacted various industries, including automotive manufacturing. For many 2022-2024 Toyota Camry and other Toyota models, this shortage meant that vehicles were delivered with only one Smart Key instead of the usual two. This situation, while not impacting vehicle functionality, created an inconvenience for owners who expected a second key for their vehicle.
Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 to rectify this. The program aims to provide affected owners with the missing second Smart Key, ensuring they have the full functionality and convenience originally intended for their vehicle.
What's affected
This program covers approximately 747,600 vehicles in total across various models and model years. The affected vehicles include a wide range of Toyota models produced between October 2022 and March 2024. The program is identified as the "SECOND KEY DELIVERY PROGRAM 23TJ01."
What Toyota will do
Toyota will provide one additional Smart Key to owners of affected vehicles, completely FREE OF CHARGE. Authorized Toyota dealers will handle the duplication and programming of this second key. Toyota has confirmed that it has sufficient parts to begin a phased implementation of this remedy.
How to get your second Smart Key
Owners of an affected Toyota Camry Smart Key or other eligible models should contact their authorized Toyota dealer to schedule an appointment. It is highly recommended to schedule in advance to confirm parts availability and minimize inconvenience. You will need to bring your vehicle and the original Smart Key to the appointment, as the original key is required for programming the new one.
The process for pairing the new key is estimated to take approximately 45 minutes. However, depending on the dealer's work schedule, it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time. Toyota will notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second keys become available. Toyota obtains customer mailing information through industry resources and state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) records, so ensuring your registration and title information is correct is important. If you need to update your ownership or contact information, you can visit https://www.toyota.com/owners.
Important warnings and owner information
This program is being rolled out in phases due to ongoing parts availability. Only vehicles included in the currently launched phase will be searchable in Toyota's internal Technical Information System (TIS) or Service Lane Portal (SLP). If you contact your dealer and your vehicle is not yet eligible, they can use the program's phase chart to provide an estimated timeline.
It's important to understand that this second key delivery is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Instead, it's a fulfillment of the originally intended purchase, which was delayed due to the chip shortage. Also, note that while a mechanical key was provided with the single Smart Key, these mechanical keys can only open/close doors (cannot be used to start the engine).
If a customer recently had a new Smart Key registered, a message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) about a new key being registered may appear for up to 10 days. This is normal and intended to inform the owner that a new key has been registered, helping to prevent vehicle theft if the registration was unauthorized.
If you have lost your only Smart Key or have an urgent need for a second key but your vehicle is in a later phase, dealers may provide a second key as a goodwill gesture. For any other extenuating circumstances or additional questions, you should contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-888-270-9371.
Dealer and technician procedures
For dealerships, specific procedures are in place to manage this program. For new and used vehicles (not certified) in dealer inventory, Toyota requests that dealers deliver the second key prior to customer delivery if available. If not immediately available, delivery of the vehicle is acceptable, provided the customer is clearly informed they will only receive one key initially. For Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (TCUV), the Second Key Delivery Program must be completed prior to delivery to the customer.
Parts ordering for the second Smart Key, identified by part number 04002-*** (TRANSMITTER SUBASSY, ELECTRICAL KEY)**, follows specific processes. Parts may be ordered through Campaign Part Order Request (CPOR) or may be under Manual Allocation Control (MAC) due to limited availability. Dealers must check the CPOR/MAC report on Dealer Daily for the most up-to-date information.
Technicians performing this key programming and delivery activity must successfully complete the most current version of the E-Learning course “Safety Recall and Service Campaign Essentials.” Additionally, technicians are required to have completed the TIC206a Electrical Repair 1 course. Dealers must verify technician certification levels via https://www.uotdealerreports.com to ensure qualified personnel perform the activity.
Remedy Procedure Summary
The general remedy procedure involves several steps:
- Verify Vehicle Eligibility: Confirm the vehicle VIN matches the repair order and check the Vehicle Inquiry System for program eligibility.
- Key Registration: If eligible, proceed with Vehicle Immobilizer System New Key Registration.
- Wireless Door Lock Control: Perform Wireless Door Lock Control System New Key Registration.
- Completion: Once completed, the vehicle is returned to the customer.
To ensure repair quality, at least one associate (other than the individual who performed the repair) must verify the activity for every vehicle prior to customer delivery. The reimbursement for this service is handled under Op Code 23TJ01R1 with a flat rate of 0.4 hours, which includes 0.1 hours for administrative costs. Accurate claim filing is crucial for government reporting activities; if a claim is filed incorrectly, refer to Warranty Procedure Bulletin PRO17-03 for correction.
