Why This Matters

Beginning in October 2022, a global semiconductor shortage impacted the availability of certain microchips essential for vehicle components. As a result, approximately 536,000 2022-2024 Toyota vehicles, including the Toyota Camry, were delivered to customers with only one Smart Key and a second mechanical key. This program addresses the inconvenience and potential security concerns of having only a single Smart Key.

What Toyota Is Doing

Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 to provide an additional Smart Key to affected owners. Any authorized Toyota dealer will duplicate and provide one additional Smart Key FREE OF CHARGE. Toyota has secured sufficient parts and is implementing this remedy in phases.

How to Check if Your Vehicle is Affected

To determine if your vehicle is eligible for the Second Key Delivery Program, you can perform a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. Vehicles involved in the program will appear during this lookup if they are part of a phase for which the remedy is currently available. The program is being rolled out in phases, and Toyota plans to notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second key is ready.

Owner Action

If your vehicle is eligible, you will need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. For the appointment, customers must bring their vehicle and the original Smart Key that was provided at delivery. The original key is required to program the new Smart Key to the vehicle. The key programming process is estimated to take about 45 minutes, though the dealer's work schedule might require the vehicle to be available for a longer period.

Important Warnings and Information

Owners should be aware of several important points regarding this program:

  • Mechanical Key Limitations: The mechanical key provided at delivery can only be used to open and close doors; it "cannot be used to start the engine."
  • Warranty Status: The delivery of the second Smart Key is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It is a fulfillment of the original vehicle purchase, which was delayed due to the chip shortage.
  • Multi-Information Display (MID) Message: If a message appears on the Multi-Information Display (MID) about a new key being registered after the service, this is normal. Depending on the model, this message may display for up to 10 days to inform the owner that a new key has been registered and to help prevent unauthorized registration.
  • Lost Key or Urgent Need: If a customer has lost their only Smart Key or has an urgent need for a second key but is not yet eligible for the program, dealers are advised to provide a second key as a goodwill gesture. For other extenuating circumstances, customers should contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center.
  • Program Timeline: Toyota estimates that all models will return to production with two Smart Keys by July 2024.
  • Contact Information: For additional questions or concerns, contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-888-270-9371, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
