Why This Program Matters
Since October 2022, a global semiconductor shortage has impacted the production of certain microchips essential for vehicle components. This shortage led to select 2022-2024 Toyota and Lexus models being delivered with only one Smart Key and a single mechanical key, instead of the standard two Smart Keys.
This program addresses the inconvenience caused by the initial delivery of a single Smart Key, ensuring owners receive the full functionality and convenience expected from their vehicle. For example, if you own a 2023 Toyota Camry second key delivery is part of this program.
What is the Second Key Delivery Program?
Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 to provide affected owners with an additional Smart Key. Any authorized Toyota dealer will duplicate and provide one additional Smart Key FREE OF CHARGE. Toyota has secured sufficient parts to begin a phased implementation of this remedy.
How to Determine Eligibility
To find out if your vehicle is eligible for the Second Key Delivery Program, your vehicle's VIN will appear during a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. Eligibility is also tied to the phased rollout of the remedy. Toyota will notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second key is available.
What Owners Need To Do
Once notified, owners should schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. You will need to bring your vehicle and its original Smart Key to the appointment. The original key is required to program the new Smart Key to the vehicle.
The key pairing process itself takes approximately 45 minutes. However, depending on the dealer's work schedule, it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period.
Important Information for Owners
- Key Functionality: The mechanical key provided at delivery can only open and close doors; it "Mechanical keys can only open/close doors (cannot be used to start the engine)".
- Smart Key Types: There are different types of Smart Keys, specifically Type #2 (15CY) and Type #3/#4 (19CY), which use different semiconductors. The timeline for receiving a second key can vary based on the specific key type your vehicle uses.
- Dashboard Message: If a new Smart Key is registered, a message about a "new key being registered" may display on the Multi-Information Display (MID) for up to 10 days. This is normal and serves as a notification that a new key has been added, helping to prevent unauthorized key registrations.
- Warranty Status: This second key delivery is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It is a fulfillment of the original purchase, which was incomplete due to the chip shortage.
- Lost Keys: If you have lost your only Smart Key or have an urgent need for a second key but are not yet eligible due to being in a later phase, please contact your dealer. Toyota may provide a second key as a goodwill gesture in such cases.
Program Timeline and Notification
Toyota estimates that all models will return to production with two Smart Keys by July 2024. Customer notifications will be sent via first-class mail in phases as second keys become available. The mailing will occur approximately one week after the announcement of each phase. This phased approach ensures a smooth distribution of the additional Smart Keys.
