What is the Toyota Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01?

Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 to address a global semiconductor shortage that impacted the delivery of new vehicles. Since October 2022, certain Toyota models were delivered with only one Smart Key and a single mechanical key, rather than the usual two Smart Keys. This program aims to provide the missing second Smart Key to affected owners.

Approximately 649,000 vehicles are covered by this program. The original publication date for this information was December 21, 2023, with an update on June 13, 2024.

Why are vehicles delivered with only one Smart Key?

The reason for the Toyota missing Smart Key is a global semiconductor shortage. This shortage affected specific microchips essential for the production of Smart Keys. As a result, many new Toyota vehicles were delivered with one Smart Key and a mechanical key that can only open/close doors but cannot be used to start the engine.

How to check if your Toyota is affected

Vehicles eligible for the Second Key Delivery Program 23TJ01 can be identified through a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. This lookup will indicate if your vehicle is involved in a phase for which the remedy is currently available. Toyota plans a phased implementation for the remedy, and the timing for each phase will be announced approximately one week before the keys become available.

What Toyota will do

Any authorized Toyota dealer will provide and duplicate one additional Smart Key for eligible vehicles FREE OF CHARGE. Toyota has confirmed sufficient parts to begin the phased rollout of this remedy. The process will involve programming the new Smart Key to your vehicle.

What owners need to do

When your vehicle becomes eligible for the program, Toyota will notify affected customers by first-class mail. You will need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. For the appointment, you must bring your vehicle and the original Smart Key. The original key will be used by the dealer to program the new Smart Key to your vehicle.

The key pairing process is estimated to take about 45 minutes. However, depending on the dealer's schedule, your vehicle might need to be at the dealership for a longer period.

Important considerations for owners

It's important to note that the second key delivery under program 23TJ01 is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It is a separate delivery to fulfill the original purchase agreement impacted by the chip shortage.

If you have recently had a new Smart Key registered to your vehicle, you might see a message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) about a new key being registered. This is normal and can display for up to 10 days, serving as a notification that a new key has been registered and helping prevent unauthorized vehicle theft.

If you lose your only Smart Key or have an urgent need for a second key before your vehicle is eligible for the program, Toyota advises contacting your dealer. They may provide a second key as a goodwill gesture for those in a later phase. For other extenuating circumstances, you can contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center for further assistance.

Key types and production timeline

Toyota uses different types of Smart Keys, specifically Type #2 (15CY) and Type #3/#4 (19CY), which have different designs and use different semiconductors. The timeline for the availability of the second Smart Key varies depending on the type used in your vehicle.

Toyota estimates that all models will return to production with two Smart Keys by July 2024. Your mailing information for notifications will be obtained through an industry provider working with state Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) based on registration or title information.

For additional questions, you can contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-888-270-9371, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST.
