2022-2024 Toyota Models Second Smart Key Program

Due to a global semiconductor shortage, many 2022-2024 Toyota and Lexus vehicles were delivered with only one Smart Key. Toyota's Second Key Delivery Program (23TJ01) aims to provide a second Smart Key free of charge to affected owners.

Toyota has initiated the Second Key Delivery Program (23TJ01) to address an issue where certain 2022-2024 models were delivered with only one Smart Key. This situation arose due to a global semiconductor shortage that affected the supply of microchips essential for Smart Key functionality. Owners of affected vehicles, such as the Toyota Camry, can expect to receive a second Smart Key at no additional cost.

Why This Program Matters

When vehicles were delivered with only one Smart Key, owners also received a mechanical key. It's important to understand the limitation of this mechanical key: "Mechanical keys can only open/close doors (cannot be used to start the engine)". This means the mechanical key serves as a basic access tool but does not provide the full convenience and functionality of a Smart Key, which is crucial for starting the vehicle and utilizing keyless entry features. The absence of a second Smart Key can also pose a significant inconvenience if the primary key is lost or damaged.

What Toyota is Doing

Toyota is committed to providing a second Smart Key to all eligible owners. Any authorized Toyota dealer will duplicate and provide one additional Smart Key FREE OF CHARGE. The program is being implemented in phases, and Toyota has sufficient parts to begin this phased rollout. The goal is to ensure all affected customers receive the full complement of keys they expected with their vehicle purchase.

Approximately 536,000 vehicles are covered by this program. The shortage is estimated to impact production until July 2024, at which point new vehicles are expected to be delivered with two Smart Keys again.

How to Get Your Second Smart Key

To determine if your vehicle is eligible for the Second Key Delivery Program (23TJ01), you can check its status through a TIS/SLP VIN lookup. Eligibility is phased, so your vehicle will appear in the system once the remedy is available for its specific phase. Toyota plans to notify affected customers by first-class mail when their second Smart Key becomes available. This mailing will also occur in phases, approximately one week after each phase's announcement.

When it's time to get your second Smart Key, you will need to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. Customers must bring their vehicle and the original Smart Key to the appointment. The original key is required for programming the new Smart Key. The pairing process for the new key is estimated to take about 45 minutes; however, depending on the dealer's schedule, you may need to leave your vehicle for a longer period.

Important Information for Owners

Owners should be aware of several key details regarding this program:

  • Warranty Status: The delivery of the second Smart Key is not considered part of Toyota's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Instead, it is the fulfillment of an item included in the original vehicle purchase that was unavailable at the time of delivery due to the chip shortage.
  • MID Message: If you recently had a new Smart Key registered, you might see a message on your Multi-Information Display (MID) stating "a new key being registered". This is normal and can display for up to 10 days. It serves as a security notification to inform the owner of a new key registration and to help prevent unauthorized vehicle theft.
  • Lost Keys or Urgent Need: If you have lost your only Smart Key or have an urgent need for a second key but are not yet eligible due to your vehicle being in a later phase, dealers are advised to provide a second key as a goodwill gesture. For other extenuating circumstances, contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-888-270-9371.
  • Owner Notification: Toyota will use an industry provider that works with state Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to obtain registration or title information for customer notifications. Ensure your registration or title information is current and correct to receive timely updates.

Different Smart Key Types

Toyota uses different types of Smart Keys, specifically Type #2 (15CY) and Type #3/#4 (19CY). These types have different designs and utilize different semiconductors. The specific type of Smart Key your vehicle uses can influence the timeline for when your second key becomes available, as semiconductor supply chains vary for each type. This is why the program is being rolled out in phases.

Toyota's Second Key Delivery Program (23TJ01) is a proactive measure to ensure all owners, including those with a Toyota Camry, eventually receive the full functionality and convenience they expect from their vehicle's key system.
