Owners of certain 2021-2024 Hyundai vehicles equipped with an 8-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transaxle may experience issues related to the transaxle position sensor. This can lead to various diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and noticeable driving symptoms. Hyundai TSB 23-AT-008H outlines the diagnostic and repair process for these conditions.

This TSB supersedes TSB 21-AT-007H, which revised parts information and added specific Santa Fe Hybrid and Santa Fe models.

Symptoms

Owners may observe one or more of the following symptoms if their Hyundai transaxle position sensor is malfunctioning:

  • The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated.
  • The vehicle enters a "5th gear fail-safe" mode.
  • There is no gear indication displayed in the instrument cluster.
  • The vehicle intermittently won't shift into Drive (D) or Reverse (R).
  • The vehicle intermittently won't shift out of Park.
  • The engine intermittently won't crank or start when in Park (P) or Neutral (N), with or without the MIL or a DTC present.

Fault Codes / DTCs

The following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may be stored in the vehicle's system, indicating an issue with the Hyundai transaxle position sensor:

DTC Code Description
P070500 Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction
P070512 Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction
P070514 Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction
P07051C Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction
P070600 Transmission range sensor circuit range/performance
P070661 Transmission range sensor circuit range/performance
P070696 Transmission range sensor circuit range/performance

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

Diagnosis of the Hyundai transaxle position sensor issue typically begins with connecting a Global Diagnostic System (GDS) tool to check for stored DTCs in the "Automatic Transaxle" menu. After recording and clearing any DTCs, technicians monitor the "Current Gear" display while cycling the shift lever through all gears (P, R, N, D) with the brake pedal depressed. If the GDS does not show the correct current gear, further inspection is required.

Technicians will visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and the position sensor (also known as the inhibitor switch). This check looks for damaged wires, open circuits, short circuits to ground, or improperly seated pins in the connector. Ground connections for the electronic shift lever are also checked for voltage drop using a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM).

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair for the Hyundai transaxle position sensor issue, as detailed in TSB 23-AT-008H, involves several steps:

  1. Initial Checks: Start the engine, connect a GDS, record and clear DTCs. Monitor the "Current Gear" display while shifting through all gears. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness for damage, open/short circuits, or loose pins between the ECU/TCU and the position sensor. For Santa Fe (TMa) 2.5L vehicles, a specific check of the harness under the battery tray for contact with the battery tray or transmission case is performed.
  3. Ground System Check: Check the grounds for the electronic shift lever using a DVOM. If the voltage drop exceeds 0.2V, clean and tighten the terminals to 7-9 lb-ft (10-12 N.m).
  4. Component Removal: Remove the air intake duct, air cleaner, hoses, battery, and battery tray to access the shift by wire (SBW) actuator and position sensor. The SBW actuator is disconnected and removed.
  5. Position Sensor Replacement: The old position sensor is removed, and a new one is installed. The manual valve is placed in the Neutral position by turning it counter-clockwise two detents, ensuring it aligns 90° to the radiator. An alignment tool (SST) is used to correctly position the new sensor, and its bolts are tightened to 7-9 lb-ft (10-12 N.m).
  6. Reassembly and Final Test: Reconnect the position switch connector, turn the manual valve clockwise two detents to the Park position, and reinstall the electronic shift actuator, torquing its bolts to 15-19 lb-ft (21-26 N.m). All removed parts are reinstalled, and radio stations are reset. The DTCs are cleared, and the vehicle is test-driven for two key-on to key-off driving cycles. If the DTC reappears, further diagnosis of the control wiring or replacement of the PCM/TCU may be necessary.

Required Tools or Parts

Technicians will require specific tools and parts for this repair:

  • Global Diagnostic System (GDS): For reading and clearing DTCs, and monitoring live data.
  • Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM): For checking voltage drops.
  • Service Tool (SST) Alignment Tools: Part numbers 09459-4G100 and 09459-4G200 are used for proper installation of the position sensor. If replacement SSTs are needed, Bosch can be contacted at 866-539-4248.
  • Replacement Position Sensor: Specific part numbers include 42700-4G6** and 42700-2H0**, depending on the vehicle model and configuration.

Important Warnings

Hyundai emphasizes that incident parts are subject to callback through the Warranty Technical Center (WTC) parts return process. Claims may be debited if the requested part is not returned. If a part is found to need replacement during this TSB procedure and is still under warranty, a separate claim should be submitted. For out-of-warranty parts, a Prior Approval request for goodwill consideration is recommended.

Warranty Information

Warranty claims for this repair should be submitted on the Claim Entry Screen as a "Warranty" type. The operation code for replacing the position sensor is 42700R00. For hybrid models, an additional operation code 42700RH1 applies. The nature code is 13A and the cause code is ZZ3. Normal warranty applies, and technicians should refer to the latest Digital Documentation Policy for repair validation requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does DTC P070500 mean for my Hyundai?
DTC P070500 indicates a "Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction." This means the vehicle's computer is detecting an issue with the sensor that tells it what gear the transmission is in, potentially leading to shifting problems or a Malfunction Indicator Light.
What are the common symptoms of a faulty Hyundai transaxle position sensor?
Common symptoms include the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating, the vehicle entering a "5th gear fail-safe" mode, no gear indication in the cluster, intermittent difficulty shifting into or out of Drive/Reverse/Park, or the engine intermittently failing to crank or start in Park or Neutral.
Is there a recall for the Hyundai transaxle position sensor issue?
This issue is addressed by Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 23-AT-008H, which provides diagnostic and repair instructions for technicians. TSBs are typically for known issues that may not rise to the level of a safety recall but offer a standardized repair procedure.
Will my dealer charge me to fix the Hyundai transaxle position sensor problem?
If your vehicle is still under warranty, the repair described in TSB 23-AT-008H should be covered by Hyundai. For vehicles outside of warranty, it's recommended to discuss potential goodwill consideration with your dealer, especially if the issue is a known problem.
