This issue affects vehicles equipped with S68T and XB1T engines, including models like the F95 (X5 M Competition Sports Activity Vehicle), F96 (X6 M Competition Sports Activity Coupe), G05 (X5 M60i SAV), G06 (X6 M60i SAC), G07 (X7 M60i, ALPINA XB7 Sedan), G09 (BMW XM, XM-Label SAV), G70 (760xi Sedan), and G90 (M5 Sedan), and G99 (M5 Touring).

Cause and Diagnosis

The root cause of the "Check Engine Oil Level" warning is identified as a DME (Digital Motor Electronics) calibration error. This error can lead to the message appearing even if the oil level is correct. It is particularly noted to occur if the engine oil measurement has not been performed for a prolonged period, such as with frequent short-distance driving profiles.

To diagnose the issue, technicians must first determine the vehicle's current I-level using applications like AIR or the Key Reader/Aftersales Workplace (AWP). This initial step helps determine the appropriate repair scenario.

Important Warnings

BMW explicitly states, "Do not Exchange of the oil-level sensor." The issue is software-related, and replacing the oil-level sensor will not resolve the problem. This is a critical point to prevent unnecessary parts replacement.

Scenario 1: The engine oil service IS NOT Recommended or Due.

1. Perform a vehicle test: This initial diagnostic step checks the vehicle's overall status.
2. Program the vehicle: If the vehicle's I-level is not S18A-25-03-500 or higher, the vehicle must be programmed using ISTA 4.52.4X or a newer version. This update will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules not running the latest software.
3. Measure and top up oil: An oil level measurement is performed to determine the exact top-up quantity needed. Engine oil is then topped up as required.
4. Delete fault memory: Any stored fault codes related to the oil level warning are cleared from the system.

Scenario 2: The engine oil service IS Recommended or Due.

1. Perform a vehicle test: Similar to Scenario 1, a vehicle test is conducted.
2. Program the vehicle: If the I-level is not S18A-25-03-500 or higher, the vehicle is programmed with ISTA 4.52.4X or newer.
3. Carry out engine oil service: A complete engine oil service is performed, including a CBS (Condition Based Service) reset.
4. Delete fault memory: Fault codes are cleared from the system.

Throughout the programming process, a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (as per SI B04 23 10) must be connected to maintain stable voltage.

Required Tools or Parts

For the software update, technicians will use the ISTA diagnostic and programming system, specifically version 4.52.4X or higher. For topping up engine oil, the following part numbers are specified:

• 83 21 5 A42 D33: 0W-30 LL01FE Bulk 209 Liter Drum (one-tenth liter)
• 83 21 5 A42 D39: 0W-30 LL01FE Bulk Tanker (one-tenth liter)

Technicians are advised not to use AIR's "Packages" section for engine oil type information.
