2024 BMW X5 Dual-Mass Flywheel Delivery Stop

Important Information for Owners

This action is classified as a "DELIVERY STOP," meaning affected vehicles cannot be delivered to customers until the necessary repair is completed. If your vehicle is new in stock, has no in-service date, or is already in the workshop for another reason, this repair must be performed first.

BMW is not notifying consumers directly for this type of action. However, dealers are instructed to check vehicle status in their systems (AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry) for any open campaigns. As of November 15, 2024, dealers can access a list of affected vehicles in the Inventory Campaign Details (ICD) under ROSS.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of this issue is the presence of "acoustic abnormalities and vibrations in the vehicle's powertrain." These symptoms arise because the dual-mass flywheel was not sufficiently greased during the manufacturing process.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

This issue is a manufacturing defect related to insufficient greasing of the dual-mass flywheel. It is identified through internal BMW systems as an open campaign for affected vehicles. There are no specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) mentioned in the bulletin related to this particular manufacturing defect, as it is a pre-delivery or in-workshop action.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair involves replacing the dual-mass flywheel. Technicians are instructed to follow Repair Instruction 11 22 000, which outlines the detailed steps for removing and installing the flywheel. The procedure also includes carrying out a vehicle test and checking/topping up the oil level in the automatic transmission.

If you own a 2024 BMW X5, X7, 3 Series, or 5 Series from the affected production dates (X5: October 15, 2024 – October 30, 2024; X7: October 30, 2024 – November 4, 2024; 3 Series/5 Series: September 25, 2024), you should contact your authorized BMW dealer. The repair for the BMW X5 dual-mass flywheel issue will be covered under warranty. This Service Information Bulletin SIB 11 09 24 supersedes SI B11 09 24 dated December 2024.
