2023-2024 BMW X1/X2 Double Clutch Transmission Rework

BMW has released Service Information Bulletin SIB 28 02 24 (Revision 4) to address a potential issue affecting the double clutch transmission and transfer box connection in certain 2023-2024 BMW X1 (U11) and X2 (U10) models. This bulletin supersedes the previous SI B28 02 24 dated August 2024 and provides updated information, including a revised parts list.

Situation

Over time, micro-movements combined with frictional corrosion can lead to increased wear on the longitudinal splined connection between the double clutch transmission (DCT) and the transfer box. This wear can potentially affect the performance and longevity of these critical drivetrain components in your BMW X1 double clutch transmission rework.

Correction

To correct this issue, technicians will add spacers at the connection point between the DCT and the transfer box. These spacers are designed to decrease the micro-movements, thereby preventing further wear and ensuring the long-term integrity of the connection. This preventative measure is crucial for the BMW X1 double clutch transmission rework.

Important Information for Owners

BMW is performing this service action on all affected vehicles. If your vehicle has not yet been delivered, the procedure will be completed before delivery. For vehicles already delivered, the repair will be performed the next time the vehicle is in the shop, provided the campaign status shows as "Open" in systems like AIR, AWP, Campaign Summary, or Warranty Vehicle Inquiry. Dealers are instructed to check their inventory for affected vehicles.

This repair is classified as "THIS REPAIR IS MOBILE FRIENDLY," indicating it may be performed with relative ease. It is important to note that completion of this service action is required before the first vehicle delivery to a customer or if the vehicle is already in the workshop for other services.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair process for the BMW X1 double clutch transmission rework involves several steps to install the necessary spacers. Technicians will follow Repair instruction 31 60 004, which details the removal and installation of the right output shaft. Accessing some bolts for the spacer may require removing or moving aside the starter motor.

If instruction 31 60 004 is not available, Repair Instruction 27 10 110, which describes replacing the radial shaft sealing ring for the connecting shaft, can be used as an alternative. However, unlike instruction 27 10 110, it is not necessary to replace the shaft sealing ring with part number 27 10 8627023 for this specific service action. The procedure involves removing the stabilizer link and two bolts on the transfer case, installing washers between the link and transfer case (potentially requiring a slight repositioning of the transfer case), and then reinstalling the right axle. Bolts are tightened to specific torque specifications.

Required Parts

To determine the exact part numbers applicable to a specific vehicle, technicians must enter the VIN/chassis number into ETK or AIR. This ensures that the correct parts are ordered based on the vehicle's specific equipment and options. The bulletin lists several common parts that may be required:

Additional materials like fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals, as specified in ISTA repair instructions or ETK/AIR, must also be used and invoiced separately under the Repair Code.

Claim Information

Reimbursement for this Service Action, identified by Repair Code 0028240100 (U10 U11 Reworking DKG connection - transfer box), will be processed through normal claim entry. Two special flat rate labor operation codes are available:

• Work Pkg #1, Labor Operation 00 75 871: Reworking the interface between the double clutch transmission and the transfer box (for completion before first vehicle delivery or if the vehicle is already in the workshop).
• Work Pkg #2, Labor Operation 00 75 284: Reworking the interface between the double clutch transmission and the transfer box (for when the vehicle arrives at the service center with an open service action).

Only one of these flat rate labor operation codes can be used for claim submission. Sublet Code 4 allows for reimbursement of repair-related bulk supply materials, up to $25.00.

This Service Action also qualifies for Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement, which can be claimed under Sublet Code 2. For more information on AMS, refer to SI B01 29 16.
