Technicians must refer to Repair Instruction 61 00, "Observe safety instructions when handling electric vehicles."

Before any HV component is disconnected or removed, the HV system must be disabled and secured by a properly trained technician using the HV Disconnect Switch. This will typically be indicated by the "Blitz" – lightning bolt icon displayed in the instrument cluster. High Voltage Battery removal and rework must only be performed by a certified HV Specialist Technician.

Furthermore, any work on the cooling system should only be carried out when the engine has completely cooled down to prevent the risk of scalding. When refilling, only prescribed, life-time coolant should be used, and it should never be reused. It is crucial not to overfill the coolant system.

Repair Procedure Summary

To address the BMW i5 coolant leak and related issues, technicians will first check all coolant changeover valves for active leaks or signs of previous leaks, such as dried coolant residue. Any changeover valves with a production date older than January 5, 2024, (part number 64 11 9 462 114) must be replaced. Improved valves were produced starting January 18, 2024.

If no leaks are found, further diagnosis using ISTA and cooling system test equipment is required. Replacement of the changeover valve(s) follows specific repair instructions:

  • For G26 and G70 models, refer to Repair Instruction 64 12 790.
  • For i20 models, refer to Repair Instructions 64 12 792 and 17 61 625.

If the electric auxiliary heater also needs replacement, the following repair instructions apply:

  • For all models, refer to Repair Instruction 64 12 821.
  • For G70 models (specifically for the HV Battery), refer to Repair Instruction 64 12 831.

After repairs, a coolant system bleeding procedure must be performed using ISTA (Vehicle management/Service functions/Electric drive/Cooling/Fill and bleed the cooling system). A functional check of the electric auxiliary heater is also necessary via ISTA (Body/Heating and air conditioning functions/Electric auxiliary heater/Heating and air conditioning functions: electric auxiliary heater). For G70 models, an additional functional check for the high voltage battery's electric auxiliary heater is performed (Electric drive/High-voltage battery unit/Electric auxiliary heater for high-voltage battery unit). The electric auxiliary heater should only be replaced if the test module specifically instructs it.

Required Tools or Parts

To perform this repair, specific parts and materials are needed:

  • Changeover valve: Part Number 64 11 9 462 114 (up to 3, as applicable).
  • Electric auxiliary heater: Refer to AIR/ETK (MG 64) for the correct part number (1 required, if necessary).
  • Electric auxiliary heater for HV battery (G70 only): Refer to AIR/ETK (MG 17) for the correct part number (1 required, if necessary).
  • HT-12 Coolant (DN = 1 gallon concentrate): Part Number 83 19 2 468 442.
  • HT-12 Antifreeze RTU (Bulk DN = 1/10 Liter) (Pre-mix): Part Number 83 19 5 A32 851.

Additional materials like fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals must be selected from the Electronic Parts Catalogue or other approved BMW Group resources based on the specific vehicle type.
