Audi has released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 2078651/1, issued on July 21, 2025, to address a common aesthetic concern: Audi black trim discoloration on various models. This bulletin provides guidance for diagnosing and repairing discoloration on external black trim strips, particularly those included in the black styling package.

Symptoms

Owners may observe a noticeable Audi black trim discoloration on the exterior trim strips of their vehicles. The discoloration typically appears as red or purple hues, though it can also manifest as grey or metallic tints. This issue affects trim components such as protective molding, decoration, and dirt deflectors.

Technical Background

According to Audi, the root cause of this discoloration is a specification issue with the paint used on these trim strips. The original paint formulation does not possess optimal UV resistance, leading to degradation and color change when exposed to sunlight over time. This explains why the trim strips change color, losing their intended black appearance.

Production Solution

Audi has implemented a change in its manufacturing process to prevent this issue in future vehicles. A new wet painting process for these trim components was introduced in series production starting October 24, 2024. This updated process aims to provide improved UV resistance and prevent discoloration on newer models.

Repair Procedure Summary

For vehicles experiencing this discoloration, the repair involves replacing the affected trim components. Dealership technicians will first compare the observed discoloration on the customer's vehicle with example photos provided in the TSB (Figures 1-3). These figures illustrate typical examples of the red/purple discoloration that qualifies for repair.

If the discoloration matches the examples, the technician will proceed with replacing the necessary exterior black trim strips. This may include renewing side windows, replacing roof trim strips, or removing and installing front or rear window slot seals, depending on the location of the discoloration. All repairs will be performed in accordance with Audi's warranty guidelines and standard repair times (SRT) for associated operations.
