2021-2023 Audi Steering Column Adjustment Not Working

Symptoms

Owners of 2021-2023 Audi models may experience that the electric steering column adjustment is not working in the vertical direction. This means the steering wheel cannot be moved up or down as expected.

Fault Codes / DTCs

When the electric steering column adjustment is not working, technicians may find the following diagnostic trouble code (DTC) stored in the electronic central control module (BCM 1), also known as J519 (address word 0009):

• DTC B14BF01: "Steering column vertical adjustment motor electrical error" with symptom code 66145.

Technical Background

Audi has identified that this issue stems from a software problem within the vehicle's systems.

Repair Procedure Summary

Technical Service Bulletin 2062288/4 outlines a multi-step procedure to resolve the electric steering column adjustment issue. The primary fix involves an update to the steering column control module (J866) using the Software Version Management (SVM) system.

First, the electric steering column adjustment function must be restored. This involves applying approximately 88 lbs (40 kg) of upward force to the steering wheel with your knees while simultaneously pressing the steering column adjustment switch upwards. This action helps to re-engage the adjustment mechanism.

Next, the steering column adjustment unit needs to be cleared by performing up to 50 adjustment cycles in the vertical direction. To facilitate this, a special tool kit, T10230, is used. The steering wheel is moved as far toward the dashboard as possible, and the driver's seat is moved fully back. The T10230 tool kit is then attached to the steering wheel using a securing strap (as shown in Figure 2 of the TSB), taking care to protect the seat with plastic foil (Figure 3).

The steering column is then operated to move all the way up and down, up to 50 times. The weight of the tool kit creates a current in the adjustment motor, which helps to clear the adjustment unit. The Test Plan should automate these 50 adjustments; if not, they must be performed manually.

This procedure requires following all instructions in TSB 2011732, titled "00 Software Version Management (SVM), operating instructions."

Required Tools or Parts

To perform the adjustment procedure, the following special tool is necessary:

• T10230: Assembly tool. This tool is specifically designed to simulate the required weight for the adjustment process. If the tool kit T10230 is not available in the workshop, a similar weight toolbox can be used.
