2022-2024 Audi Overhead View Camera Inoperative TSB

Symptoms

Owners of affected Audi vehicles may notice that "one of the overhead view cameras is inoperative" or "one of the overhead view cameras is fogged up." This can result in a "picture is blurry or fogged up" display on the MMI screen, impacting the functionality of the overhead view camera system.

When the Audi overhead view camera inoperative condition occurs, one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may be stored in the J1121 driver assist systems control module (address word 00A5):

It's important to note that due to diagnostic limitations of the J1121 control unit, the logged DTCs or blanked cameras on the MMI display may not always directly correspond to the actual defective camera branch.

Important Warnings

Audi has issued a critical warning regarding the diagnosis and repair of this issue:

"Replacing cameras (-R243–, –R244–, –R245-, -R246-) or the driver assist systems control module -J1121-will not resolve this customer complaint. Claims for replaced cameras or driver assist systems control modules may be denied."

This means that a thorough diagnostic process must be followed before replacing any components to avoid unnecessary costs and denied warranty claims.

Diagnosis and Repair Procedure Summary

This Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 2055188/6) outlines three scenarios for diagnosing and resolving the Audi overhead view camera inoperative condition:

Scenario 1: Fogged, Cloudy, or Blurry Camera Image

If an individual overhead view camera is "fogged up" or its image is "cloudy or blurry," the recommended action is to replace the affected camera along with its adapter wiring harness. Technicians are instructed to take clear pictures of the complaint before and after the repair.

Scenario 2: Multiple DTCs Logged

When several or all of the listed DTCs are present in the J1121 driver assist systems control unit, a more detailed diagnostic approach is required.

1. Isolate the Fault: Disconnect all cameras from the J1121 control unit. Then, connect each camera individually. After connecting each camera, a bus sleep cycle must be performed to reinitialize the J1121 control unit.
2. Test Each Camera: For each connected camera, activate the overhead view camera system. Move the doors, hood, or trunk (depending on the camera's position) and simultaneously check the MMI screen to ensure the image displays correctly and without interruption. This process helps pinpoint the affected camera branch.
3. Inspect Wiring: Once the problematic camera branch is identified, thoroughly inspect all coupling points and coax cables between the J1121 control unit and the affected overhead view camera (R243, R244, R245, R246). Look for loose connectors, pushed-back pins, corrosion, or physical damage, such as pinched or overbent coax cables.

Scenario 3: Single DTC Logged

If only one individual overhead view camera DTC is logged, without any other related DTCs:

1. Reinitialize Control Module: Perform a bus sleep cycle to reinitialize the J1121 driver assist systems control module.
2. Test Camera: Activate the overhead view camera system and check the MMI screen for correct image display while moving the relevant vehicle parts (doors, hood, trunk).
3. Persistent DTC: If the DTC persists and is identical to the initial one, inspect all coupling points and coax cables between the J1121 control unit and the affected overhead view camera (R243, R244, R245, R246) for any issues like loose connectors, pushed-back pins, corrosion, or damage.
4. Component Swapping: If no wiring problems are found, swap the affected overhead camera with another camera from the vehicle. If the fault then follows the swapped camera, the original camera needs replacement.
5. Wiring Overlay: If the fault does not follow the camera, double-check the wiring. This involves removing the connector housing on the J1121 side of the coax wire and swapping it with a camera at a different position. If the fault then follows the swapped coax wire, overlay the coax wire to the camera.
