2021-2023 Audi Gearbox Malfunction DTC P17F900

Owners of certain 2021-2023 Audi models may encounter a "Gearbox Malfunction" warning message on their instrument cluster. This warning is typically accompanied by a specific Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM). This technical service bulletin, 35 23 45 2064312/4, addresses the diagnosis and repair for this condition.

This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 35 number 22-42, dated January 14, 2022, incorporating updated model years and revised warranty information.

Symptoms

The primary symptom reported by owners is the illumination of a "Gearbox Malfunction" message. Technicians may also find various other DTCs related to low hydraulic pressure stored in the system.

Fault Codes / DTCs

When diagnosing the Audi gearbox malfunction P17F900, the following DTC may be stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM), specifically the -J217- control unit (address word 0002):

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

This TSB applies if the DTC P17F900 with symptom code 22345 is stored as active/static in the TCM. If the DTC is not active or static, or the symptom code does not match, this bulletin does not apply.

Technicians should follow the Guided Fault Finding procedure for the DTC. If the test plan indicates that the Parking Lock Solenoid N486 needs replacement, the repair steps outlined in this bulletin should be followed. If Guided Fault Finding suggests a different repair, this TSB is not applicable.

Important Warnings

PHEV Models require transmission removal which requires the HV system to be deactivated. Read and follow all of the Elsa Repair Manual steps and safety precautions.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair process involves removing the mechatronics unit and performing a visual inspection of the bolts for pressure filter 2 (as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3 of the original document). There are three possible repair options based on the inspection findings:

1. Option 1: Loose Bolts If one or more bolts are loose, or if the securing ring is not flush with the valve body (Figure 4), the pressure filter 2 and its associated bolts must be replaced. This procedure is detailed in the workshop manual.

2. Option 2: Broken or Missing Bolt Heads If any bolt heads are broken off or missing (Figure 5), the Valve Body needs to be replaced. If a new valve body is unavailable for the specific vehicle, the entire Mechatronics unit should be replaced instead. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is reused.

3. Option 3: All Bolts Tight If all three bolts are found to be tight, the Parking Lock Solenoid N486 and its pressure pipe (Figure 4) must be replaced according to the Elsa Repair Manual.

After completing the repair, a test drive is required to confirm proper operation and ensure the Audi gearbox malfunction P17F900 is resolved.
