2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra Steering Bearing Noise TSB

Owners of certain 2021-2022 Hyundai Elantra, Kona, Sonata, and Palisade vehicles may experience a noticeable bearing noise emanating from the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) column worm shaft assembly. This issue, identified in Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 22-ST-005H-1, provides a detailed procedure for diagnosing and resolving the C-MDPS WORM SHAFT BEARING NOISE by replacing the affected worm shaft bearing.

This TSB supersedes a previous bulletin, 22-ST-005H, to incorporate information about a new bearing kit, a new tool, and updated applicable models. For specific 2018-2020 Elantra (ADA) models with certain production dates, TSB 22-ST-004H should be referenced. Similarly, for 2020-2022 Sonata (DN8A) models produced within a specific timeframe, TSB 22-ST-003H applies.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of this issue is a distinct bearing noise originating from the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) column worm shaft assembly. This Hyundai Elantra steering noise can typically be heard when the steering wheel is turned left or right.

Diagnosis / trigger conditions

To determine if the Hyundai Elantra steering noise is coming from the MDPS column and housing, a technician will start the engine and turn the steering wheel left and right. The noise will be located near the C-MDPS motor on the steering column, specifically from the worm shaft housing. • Tool Usage: "Ensure the correct bearing mount tool is used. Using the incorrect tool can damage the bearing and/or MDPS housing."
• Battery Disconnection: "Wait at least 3 minutes before proceeding to ensure voltage is bled off." and "Not removing the negative (-) terminal from the battery may result in accidental airbag deployment and possible physical injury."
• Airbag Handling: "The airbag may accidently be deployed and possibly cause physical injury. After removing the knee airbag module, position airbag with the cover facing upward."

Required tools or parts

To address the Hyundai Elantra steering noise, specific bearing kits and special service tools (SSTs) are required:

Bearing Kits:

• "626" Bearing Kit: Part Number 56359-L1AAAFFF (Outer Diameter: 19mm)
• "608" Bearing Kit: Part Number 56358-AAAAAFFF (Outer Diameter: 22mm)

Special Service Tools (SSTs):

• MDPS SMALL BEARING REMOVAL TOOL: Part Number 0K563-L2100FFF (Used for both 626 and 608 bearings)
• "626" MDPS SMALL BEARING MOUNTING TOOL: Part Number 0K563-L2200FFF (For 626 bearing only)
• "608" MDPS SMALL BEARING MOUNTING TOOL: Part Number 09563-IB200 (For 608 bearing only)

Note that the application of the correct bearing kit for Sonata HEV (DN8 HEV) models is split by production date. Technicians must verify the required bearing kit by measuring the bearing within the MDPS housing if the vehicle's production date is October 23, 2020.

Repair procedure summary

The repair process for the C-MDPS WORM SHAFT BEARING NOISE involves several steps to replace the worm shaft bearing. The MDPS assembly does not need to be entirely removed for this repair.

1. Preparation: The technician will remove the crash pad lower panel. If the vehicle is equipped with a knee airbag, it will be carefully removed after disconnecting the negative battery terminal and waiting at least three minutes for voltage to bleed off. Any additional parts obstructing access to the small bearing will also be removed.
2. Disassembly: Depending on the vehicle, a plug or plastic cover will be removed from the MDPS housing. The anti-rattle plug, anti-rattle spring, slide pin, and sliding damper are then removed and discarded or set aside for reassembly.
3. Bearing Removal: The MDPS small bearing removal tool (0K563-L2100FFF) is used to extract the old bearing from the MDPS housing. This tool grasps the outer race of the bearing, and a threaded rod is turned to slowly pull the bearing off the worm shaft.
4. Cleaning: Excess grease is removed using a supplied paper stick.
5. Bearing Installation: The new bearing is inserted into the appropriate bearing holder (either 626 or 608, depending on the vehicle). The correct bearing mounting tool (0K563-L2200FFF for 626 or 09563-IB200 for 608) is then used to slowly seat the new bearing onto the worm shaft using a torque wrench. It's crucial to use hand tools for this step due to small torque values.
6. Inspection: The technician inspects the newly seated bearing to ensure it is fully seated and the end of the worm shaft protrudes approximately 1.2mm (0.047 inch). If not, the bearing seating torque is increased, and the process is repeated.
7. Reassembly: The new sliding damper and plastic end cover are installed, ensuring the correct parts are used and properly aligned. All previously removed parts are reinstalled in reverse order. The negative battery cable is reconnected, and any radio preset stations are reprogrammed.

This procedure, with an operation code of 56352F00 and an estimated time of 0.6 M/H, is covered under normal warranty with causal parts 56359-L1AAAFFF or 56358-AAAAAFFF, and nature code Q57, cause code ZZ6.
