2022 Hyundai Elantra / Sonata / Santa Fe EPB Warning Light TSB

Certain 2022 Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, and Santa Fe vehicles may illuminate the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light. This issue is linked to brake fluid potentially entering the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) electrical connector.

Even if the EPB warning light is on, the Electronic Parking Brake's performance typically remains unaffected. Hyundai has released Service Campaign 990 to address this concern, which may also present with DTC C1501.

Symptoms

The primary symptom owners might notice is the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light illuminating on the dashboard. This light indicates a potential issue with the EPB system. Despite the warning, the EPB typically continues to function normally.

This condition is caused by brake fluid infiltrating the HECU (Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit) electrical connector. If you observe the Hyundai Elantra EPB warning light, it's important to have your vehicle inspected.

Fault codes / DTCs

If brake fluid enters the HECU electrical connector, your vehicle's diagnostic system may store a specific fault code. This code helps technicians identify the root cause of the EPB warning light.

What the service bulletin says

Service Campaign 990, detailed in TSB 23-01-036H-1, instructs technicians to inspect the HECU for brake fluid intrusion. The inspection involves measuring the dark current at the junction box to determine if a leak is present.

If the inspection confirms brake fluid intrusion or an issue with the HECU, the unit must be replaced. Due to limited parts inventory, HECU Unit Assemblies are VIN-restricted for ordering, ensuring parts are allocated to affected vehicles within the campaign.

Dealers were provided with a Multimeter DT-830D+ (HK589-DT830QQH) to perform the necessary dark current measurements. If a replacement is needed, a Service Rental Car (SRC) is recommended for the owner.

What to do

If you own a 2022 Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, or Santa Fe and notice the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light illuminated, or if you suspect an issue with your HECU, contact your authorized Hyundai dealership immediately.
