Symptoms

Owners of 2020-2023 Audi Q8, SQ8, and RS Q8 vehicles may experience an inoperative air conditioning system. The primary complaint is that the A/C does not cool the vehicle. This condition is often accompanied by a specific diagnostic trouble code.

Fault Codes / DTCs

When diagnosing an inoperative A/C system, technicians may find the following DTC stored in the onboard supply control unit (J519) at diagnostic address 0009:

Technical Background

The root cause of the Audi Q8 B11AE15 issue is insufficient wiring length to the A/C compressor connector, specifically connector T3r. This can lead to the wires becoming stretched, broken, or pulled from the connector over time, resulting in the A/C system becoming inoperative. Audi has implemented a production solution by increasing the harness length in newer vehicles.

Repair Procedure Summary

If your Audi Q8, SQ8, or RS Q8 is experiencing the Audi Q8 B11AE15 fault, the repair involves addressing the wiring at the A/C compressor. The steps are as follows:

1. Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring at connector T3r, located near the A/C compressor, for any signs of damage. Figure 1 in the TSB illustrates the N280 control wire damaged at the T3r connection.
2. Expose Damaged Area: It may be necessary to carefully cut back several inches of the harness tape to fully expose the damaged section of the harness.
3. Prepare Wires: Cut back any damaged wires until the remaining wire is clean and free of corrosion.
4. Extend Wires: All three wires must be extended to achieve a total length of approximately 110 mm when measured from the base of the connector to the first branch in the harness. Figure 2 in the TSB provides a visual guide for this measurement.
5. Ensure Slack: Verify that there is enough slack in the harness to prevent stretching, but not so much that the wires hang down.
6. Repair and Modify: Use the specialized tool VAS 1978 B to repair and modify the harness.
7. Insulate Harness: Wrap the repaired section of the harness using fabric adhesive tape, part number N 105 920 02. Wrap the wires up to 20mm from the base of the connector housing, mimicking the original harness.
8. Clear Faults: After the repair, clear any stored fault codes from the control unit.
9. Functional Check: Perform a functional check of the A/C system to ensure it is operating correctly.
