On Saturday 10/18 I was traveling about 60mph on the Long Island Expressway at approximately 12:30pm when I went to accelerate to pass a vehicle. Immediately upon pressing the accelerator the truck lost all throttle power and I quickly lost speed down to 45mph before throttle response came back. The truck harshly went into gear once throttle power resumed.

Toyota requires the ABS system to be recalibrated. The only way is by going to a Toyota dealership and having the technicians use the fancy expensive diagnostic tools and computer software. I got my brakes changed by a reputable shop. However, I did not know whether they knew this or not. Now my front passenger pad is always rubbing on the rotor. These issues may cause high fuel consumption, strain on the transmission and driveline components, and even the possibility of fire. It would be really helpful if Toyota built vehicles that can easily be maintained as well as less complicated systems requiring owners to pay dealership prices for maintenance that should allow the owner to address it or any mechanic shops.

My 2023 Toyota Tundra experienced a complete engine failure at approximately 25,000 miles. The vehicle suddenly shut off while driving and had to be towed to the dealer, where technicians determined that the engine had seized due to a spun bearing and a broken connecting rod. Toyota replaced the short block under warranty. While I appreciate that Toyota covered the repair, I believe this failure is directly related to the same manufacturing defect that led to Toyota’s ongoing Tundra engine recall. However, my VIN was not included in that recall campaign. Based on the nature of the failure, timing, and identical symptoms reported by many other Tundra owners, it appears Toyota’s recall does not fully capture all affected engines. In my case, the dealership documented that the piston connecting rod broke apart and that the main bearing spun—issues consistent with the debris and machining defects referenced in Toyota’s recall. Rather than performing a complete engine replacement (as done for covered VINs), Toyota only replaced the short block assembly, leaving other components potentially contaminated or compromised. This situation raises a broader safety concern: engine seizure at highway speeds poses a sudden loss-of-power risk that could lead to accidents. I urge NHTSA to investigate whether Toyota’s current recall scope is too narrow and to determine if additional Tundra engines—including mine—should be included.

Brakes - When descending down a hill at speed the brakes on my truck pulsate as if the rotors are warped. My family was put at risk due to the brakes not functioning properly and causing me to let off the braking system in order to prevent overheating. I asked my dealer to review the brakes and they indicated nothing is wrong, I can reproduce this action anytime for the dealership with a simple ride up and down the mountain. This could result in a crash harming myself, my family, or other motorists. The problem began between 5k-10k miles and is getting worse. My truck currently has 16k miles. The brakes should last 40k-60k miles with no problem. Engine/fuel system - Since new, my truck has never met the window sticker EPA ratings listed. 22-23 models being recalled due to engine failure leads me to believe my engine is not performing at peak performance, thus, affecting fuel economy. I am afraid my model (built in 2023) is slowly experiencing the same main bearing failure as the 22-23 models suffered, having catastrophic results and was recalled to have a full engine replacement. My engine failing while driving could result in a crash harming myself, my family, or other motorists. I prefer not to wait for my engine to fail, given the fact that 22-23 models have all been recalled due to this manufacturing defect. Some, if not all 2024 models should also be recalled out of abundance of precaution.

The contact's father-in-law owns a 2025 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while her father-in-law was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brakes independently activated. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle stopped excessively hard. In addition, because of the hard vehicle stop, the contact's father-in-law and mother-in-law were jerked forward very hard. The contact stated that her father-in-law and mother-in-law, who were seated in the front passenger's seat, stated that the impact felt like it could have caused whiplash. The contact stated that the two brake sensors were disabled prior to the drive. The contact referenced an unknown recall which had a similar failure description; however, the VIN was not associated. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The contact was informed that because the VIN was not associated with the recall, the dealer had declined to inspect or repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.

When from a stop vehicle does not accelerate as normal, especially while turning. Lag and hesitation is experienced for a moment and then catches causing a rapid acceleration. When turning across oncoming lanes of traffic the unexpected lag and lack of acceleration considerably increases risk of side collision from cross traffic and risk of rear collision from traffic behind due to inability to know consistent time, speed, and acceleration needed to safely cross lanes of traffic and expected acceleration speed anticipated by vehicles from rear. Concern has been brought up to dealer and properly notified. Dealer was unable to replicate. No dash warnings appeared.

The engine of my 2023 Toyota Tundra failed at approximately 34,500 miles. The failure involved sudden loss of oil pressure and severe internal damage, with metal shavings found in the oil and oil filter. The oil filter itself detached during the incident and was later recovered with metallic debris inside. The vehicle and the recovered filter are available for inspection upon request. While accelerating from a stop light on a busy morning public road, the engine suddenly lost power, illuminated multiple warning lamps, and entered limp mode with “low oil pressure” and “engine malfunction” messages. The truck rapidly leaked oil, creating a roadway hazard and putting me, my wife & son, and other drivers at risk of accident. I was able to limp the vehicle home .5 miles from the incident at reduced speed, but complete engine seizure was a possibility. Toyota of Fort Walton Beach inspected the vehicle, confirmed metal shavings in the oil pan, documented codes P05202 and P052049 (low oil pressure and oil pressure sensor stuck in range), and noted “oil was very metallic.” The vehicle was inspected by Toyota dealership technicians and corporate representatives. I also have possession of the oil filter and photos/videos from the inspection. At the moment of failure, the dash displayed low oil pressure, check engine light, and a message regarding engine/electronic malfunction. Prior to this event, there were no warning signs — the truck had been serviced two weeks earlier at 33,360 miles, and I drove approximately 1,200 miles without incident until the catastrophic failure. This failure matches the description in Toyota Recall 24V-381. My vehicle’s build date (February 27, 2023) is less than two weeks outside the published recall production window, yet the symptoms and inspection results are identical. I respectfully request NHTSA investigate whether additional 2023 Toyota Tundra vehicles outside the current recall window are affected, as my case demonstrates the same hazards.

I am writing to formally document a series of serious safety incidents and ongoing concerns regarding my 2024 Toyota Tundra, which I believe reflect a critical design flaw and a failure by Toyota to act in accordance with its obligations to customer safety and product reliability. In August 2025, while driving on the interstate with my minor child in the vehicle, I experienced a sudden and unexpected engine malfunction. The failure required me to swerve off the road at high speed, nearly resulting in a serious collision. This incident placed both my life and my child's life in immediate danger. The vehicle was towed via Toyota’s SOS service to Green’s Toyota of Lexington, KY. Upon evaluation, I was informed by Service Manager Justin that the issue was consistent with the engine failures that led to a recall of the 2022 and 2023 Toyota Tundra models. However, because my 2024 model has not yet been included in the recall—despite sharing the same apparent defect—I was told that Toyota would rebuild the engine rather than replace it. I expressed strong concerns regarding the safety and long-term reliability of a rebuilt engine in a new vehicle. I was reassured that a rebuilt engine would be “just as good,” despite clear evidence to the contrary based on subsequent events. As a result of this dangerous failure and Toyota’s inadequate response, I submitted a formal buyback request to Toyota Customer Care, citing serious and ongoing safety concerns. The dealership nevertheless indicated I would likely be denied a buyback, which I found deeply troubling given the known defect and the high-risk circumstances involved. During the initial repair, I visited the dealership to retrieve personal belongings and observed the vehicle in a completely dismantled state. The cab had been removed, and the engine was fully disassembled with parts scattered on the ground. This unprofessional and chaotic environment caused further loss of confidence in the repair quality and safety of th

While driving forward at approximately 20MPH, the automatic emergency brake system activated, causing the vehicle to come to a stop. There were no vehicles or other object in front of the vehicle that should have caused the automatic brake system to activate. This has been an ongoing problem with this vehicle. The system cannot be turned off or disabled by the driver. This system engaging on its own creates a major safety hazard, as vehicles behind have to stop to avoid hitting my stopped vehicle.

- #11692346October 9, 2025ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while cold-starting the vehicle, the vehicle was idling roughly. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, after removing the foot from the accelerator pedal, the vehicle vibrated abnormally. The contact stated that after depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated before responding as needed. There was no warning illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the computer system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was recently taken for an oil change, and the contact was informed by the dealer that the oil would not be changed because the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V381000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) and was waiting to be completed. The contact was informed that another letter would be sent by the manufacturer when the vehicle could be repaired under recall. The contact had not yet received another letter from the manufacturer. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact related the failure to the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 17,400.
