There are 4 issues to report for our Tesla Model Y: 1) On the highway, our Tesla often presses on the brakes and slows down by itself when it should not be doing so. This occurs when we have adaptive cruise control on. We’ve noticed that at the time of the slowdown, the Tesla misreads the highway speed limit. For example, the Tesla will read the speed limit as 70 mph, then all of sudden without warning, the Tesla will suddenly read the speed limit at 40 mph, which then causes the Tesla to break and slow down by itself, when the speed limit is actually still 70 mph. This can happen several times on a single highway trip. Aside from the shock we receive as a driver as our vehicle slows unexpectedly, this could cause a rear end collision if a car is following us too closely from behind. 2) When we use adaptive cruise control and the steering assist feature, the car does not recognize to slow down on highway off ramp curves. I monitor the speed around curves, though if a driver is not aware of the issue and expects for the Tesla to take the curve slowly, this could cause an issue. In particular, if there is a big curve, I’d be concerned of the Tesla losing control and going off the road, due to speed. 3) The car will often provide a frontal collision warning, even if there is no car or object in front of the car, while it's in motion. This can lead to confusion for the driver or possibly hard breaking, which could cause a rear-end collision, if a car is following too close behind the Tesla. Also, the Tesla driver may swerve unnecessarily to avoid an object that isn’t there, which could cause a collision. 4) The Tesla is advertised as being able to travel over 300 miles on a single charge, however, the conditions for this to happen seem incredibly difficult to meet, as mileage is usually far less than this. This can cause drivers to overestimate how far they can drive, which could lead to cars urgently pulling of the road to prevent stalling where traffic is.

The car was being driven on a low speed road (about 30mph) and suddenly the traction control, ABS, power steering, and all drivers assistance features (automatic vehicle hold, emergency braking, etc) all went out as well. The car became very dangerous, instantly and the car was almost in an accident. The manufacturer has been completely unresponsive.

The car will break for no reason when cruise control is enabled or autopilot. This happens at least once every time I use it. The deceleration is abrupt and could cause someone to rear end me. The cruise control is useless because it’s so bad.

This is my sixth complaint to you. I own a 2021Tesla Model Y. I took possession of it on August 7, 2021, in Santa Barbara, Ca. Ever since, I have had several thousand instances of automatic emergency braking (phantom braking) episodes while using cruise control or autopilot. On January 26, 2022, I had 47 episodes, in two hours. This is typical. I was told immediately following my purchase last August that there would soon be a software update to remedy the problem. There hasn't! I have had five appointments with the Tesla service center, and they continually say "we can't fix it, only the software engineers can". The braking episodes are dangerous! I implore you to hold Tesla accountable and demand they fix the problem immediately. PLEASE!

Reporting “phantom braking” issues during 1600 mile cross-country from Kansas to California. During this trip there were approximately 45 incidences of the rapid uncommanded braking while on 4 lane divided highways. All driving was daytime, sunny weather at speeds between 70-80 mph. Braking occurred with both cruise control/auto steer enabled (No FSD), as well as only cruise control enabled.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, LANE DEPARTURE: WARNING
Several instances of emergency braking applied without warning or obvious need during multiple driving sessions. This results in an unexpected rapid vehicle deceleration. Fortunately no other vehicle was following close enough to represent an imminent safety hazard though it is easily plausible this could happen. Typically the issue occurs when traveling uphill or around a bend and encountering traffic in an oncoming lane, structures (bridges) or dark shadows. The unexpected emergency braking has also happened when adaptive cruise control or autopilot is engaged while overtaking large vehicles on the left (tractor trailers in the right lane). I have also noticed several erroneous lane departure warnings despite turning off these notifications on the dashboard. They are more a nuisance than safety hazard so far but would like to completely silence them entirely. These issues have yet to be reproduced or inspected by the dealer, police, insurance or other investigator. No warning lamps or indicators were active at the time the braking or lane departure warnings were observed.

I was traveling early morning before sunrise over the tehachapi pass towards Mojave in California. Someone had lost a camper shell from the top of a pickup truck in the lane. It was still dark outside. I saw the obstruction in the road but the car cameras did not pick it up. I pulled into the left lane to try to get around the camper shell. The lane assist pulled me right back into the camper shell which tore down the side of the car doing 10k in damage. The car never recognized impact or an accident. I have the videos from the cameras of the car. The lane assist, as far as I know, only doesn’t activate when the turn signal is used, which I did not have time for, as I had less than 200 feet between me and the camper shell.

With Autopilot engaged (either adaptive cruise or self-steering), the car break unexpectedly on 2 way highways. This usually happened when a semi truck was coming in opposite direction, in its lane or the car in front will move into a left lane and slow down at a safe distance. This had the potential to be rear-ended. Not reported to Tesla or inspected. No prior warnings. There were 6-7 incidents in the span of 3 days of travel from WA state to CA, over 1100 miles, starting on May 18, 2022.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving approximately 75 MPH with the cruise control activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking and stopped completely. The contact stated that there were no other vehicles nearby during the failure. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle responded after several attempts. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 3,700.

AIR BAGS, SEATS
Tesla Model Y passenger airbags are armed automatically based on the weight in the seat. The manual states the airbag should be on with a person weighing above 100 lbs. The airbag does not turn on consistently for my wife who weighs about 120 lbs. About 80% of the time the airbag remains off. Even when the airbag is on, sometimes it will turn off from a deceleration approaching a stop sign. Took the car in for a service at the Tesla service center and they say airbag staying off is "normal" for a 120 lbs person. They advised we tilt the seat cushion down in the back to help activate the weight sensor. The passenger weight sensor or the program logic of the car is not reliable to turn on the airbag for my wife consistantly.

I have encountered several "phantom" braking events while driving my Tesla Y in auto-pilot mode, all on the freeway or highway. This most recent event occurred while returning from Las Vegas. In each case, something dark across the road triggered the event. In two cases it was dark asphalt strips that were perpendicular to the highway. in the other case, it was a dark shadow of a bridge across the highway. I assume the car's auto-pilot system thought these things were solid objects and therefore braked. I captured each phantom braking event on the car's built-in camera and am enclosing the screen captures.

I was pulling out of the garage and I heard disturbing sound coming from the bottom it sounds like something is breaking. I thought I drove over something like water bottle but a lot louder. So I stopped halfway through the garage and looked under, nothing visible looked around each tire nothing, checked the monitor screen no warning, nothing, so I thought maybe the sound is not coming from the car and I decided to continue, pulling out and made it to the drive way and still a lot of noise sounds like big crack sound. I parked and checked the tires nothing. Looked under the front bumper, it looks like something is a little out of shape but it wasn’t clear. Then I realized I can’t drive like this so I started to drive forward the noise was very loud, barely made it to the original parking spot then I got out of the vehicle, checked again and a lot of stuffs hanging near front wheels, looks like something is wrong with the suspension, the car has only 2000 miles on it. The worst part is that there is not a single warning sign on that big screen which supposed to show If something is not in order. If it wasn’t for the unpleasant noise, my 7 month pregnant wife would have been driving in the middle of a freeway in less than 5 minutes. I am still shaking from how close we were to be a real danger to ourselves and to other drivers on the roads. We got lucky that it happened right before we get to the roads. I want a full safety and defects inspections on the 2022 model Y

I was driving to and from mammoth lakes California. Middle of the day, clear weather, with no other cars within thousands of feet if me. I put my vehicle into adaptive cruise control (not autopilot) and several times during the drive the brakes would slam to the point of reducing my speed from around 70 mph to roughly 40 mph very quickly. It was extremely happened and was repeatable but with no known reason.
