- #11475080July 21, 2022FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
While driving at highway speed and in adaptive cruise control, my car experienced abrupt deceleration. This happened at least 6 times in the course of a round trip from Austin to El Paso and back. In each instance, there was no nearby obstacle, such as a vehicle or debris or an animal. All driving was done in daylight, and the car wasn’t traveling through an underpass or any other shadow.

I received my 2022 Tesla Model Y a few weeks ago and quickly began to notice intermittent sudden breaking when utilizing the "Auto-pilot" feature. Because of these incidents I rarely utilize this feature any more. Today during an out of town trip, on two occasions when utilizing cruise control the car suddenly applied its breaks. During both occasions there were no other vehicles within 100 yards and the freeway (I-17 in Arizona) opposite direction lanes were separated by hills/rocks and not in direct eyesight.

Phantom braking — the car brakes for no reason in navigate on autopilot as well as adaptive cruise control. The phantom braking is particularly extreme on I80 through Nevada and US Rte 95 through Oregon, which is a two-lane road.

While driving on highways /interstates and using the vehicle cruise control or autopilot, the vehicle will suddenly apply the braking system when there is nothing in front of it. I would list specifics, but it happens every time that we take the vehicle on the highway/interstate, usually within the first 15 minutes. This has happened multiple times on trips, at 80mph (South Dakota) or at 65mph. I have noticed that white vehicles tend to trigger it more than others, even if they are just sitting on the side of the road or parked in a driveway off of the highway. Hills also seem to throw it off, when you are at the top and just over the crest, it has applied the brakes multiple times. This has gotten progressively worse since I've owned the vehicle (Dec 2021) which is why I am only now reporting it. I will no longer use it as I firmly believe me or my family would be seriously injured or killed if there is a vehicle behind me, especially at 80 mph that was not expecting the car to brake hard and as a result rear ended me. This is a significant vehicle vision system issue and it really does need to be addressed before lives are lost, if they have not been already. There are no other issues with the vehicle, no warning lights on and absolutely no indication the vehicle will apply the brakes until you are suddenly lurched forward due to rapid deceleration. I understand this is already on NHTSA radar but believe this is a much larger issue than is being reported.

The rear hatch can be opened while the car is in drive or reverse from a remote input from the app. On several occasion my hatch has opened from a remote input while in traffic while stopped at red lights. Tesla says this is normal behavior. So what is possible is someone can open the hatch from a remote input from anywhere without being able to see the car. My concern is when this has happened item could have fallen from my trunk into traffic resulting in damage or vehicles behind me. To close the hatch you must place the car in park first. Having a vehicle in park in traffic could result in a collision. You can not move the vehicle while the hatch is closing or it stops closing it takes several seconds to open or close the hatch and additional time to realize you must place the vehicle in park to close it. Remote input to operate the hatch should be disabled while the vehicle is in drive or reverse. The event has occurred on 4 occasions while driving the vehicle over the last year.

The car system been keep crash cause it screen frozen and while crash it will no speed display no ac no warning no back up camera and important after lifting gas pedal the car will not reduce speed as before and I almost crash the car. Been report the problem to Tesla since early July and the keep cancel my appointment said it need wait for updates but can’t provide the date. I requested get the loaner while they can’t solve the problem but they denied and cancel my service appointment . It dangerous to drive and very unpredictable when the system crash while driving. While driving expect the car will reduce Speed but it not and no speed will display will cause over speed limit. The the pre collision system will not work at all and the system crash every few minutes and screen will shut off it self. While system crash will need triple amount of force the press on brake pedal to stop the car when it on high speed it impossible to respond to stop at short distance.

The vehicle loose power all of sudden while driving disabling all power including loss of power steering, failure of lane departure avoidance, regenerative brakes, parking breaks, traction and stability controls. This has caused hazardous dangerous conditions on the road. The vehicle had to be towed to local Tesla repair/service center on 4 occasions. We have been given false reassurance with no definitive fix yet, continues to be an ongoing issues that recurs after few weeks that vehicle comes back from service center.

On July 16, 2022 I was traveling west on I-40, east of Tucumcari, NM. I was using Traffic Adaptive Cruise Control (TACC). There were no cars within a mile of me, front or back. The weather was clear, the road was flat. The car suddenly braked without warning. The objects stored in the back of the car flew forward, striking the two front seats. The wheels did not lock up. I immediately stabbed the accelerator. I saw the power line bar graph indicator go fully to the right. I contacted Tesla to request a service appointment. Tesla initially set an appointment but then cancelled it, explaining there was nothing wrong with the car. I was reminded that TACC (along with virtually all other Tesla driving aids) is "beta" and may therefore not function as intended or expected. It was the responsibility of the driver to assume the risks implied. Prior to this event, I had already decided not to use any technology more advanced than the speed control (TACC) as they behaved poorly. I thought that adaptive cruise control (Tesla: TACC) was a such a common technology that it wouldn't exhibit phantom braking. I was wrong.

I own a 2021Tesla Model Y. I took possession of it on August 7, 2021, in Santa Barbara, Ca. Ever since, I continuously experience automatic emergency braking (phantom braking) episodes while using cruise control or autopilot. It is very dangerous because I almost got rear-ended. I've had it in Tesla's service center several times for inspection. They always say the technicians can't fix the phantom braking problem, that only the engineers can, and that they are working on it. It's been one year and there hasn't been a software update to remedy the dangerous flaw. Will you please force Tesla to fix the hundred, perhaps thousands, of Tesla Models 3 and Ys that have this problem? An investigation and recall would be welcomed. Thanks!

I was driving on freeway 110S in heavy evening traffic. Suddenly Tesla touchscreen showed "Vehicle shutting down - pull over safely" and "Power reduced .. exit and enter may restore operation". Car had enough momentum and luckily I could change one lane and moved to shoulder. There was no crash and I called Tesla roadside assistance for towing car to Tesla service center. The car could not start and towed to nearest service station. This is a safety issue.

Model Y will repeatedly break for no reason while using Autopilot. This seems to happen most often less busy and smaller highways. The behavior makes Autopilot extremely unsafe to use when traveling at high speed with other vehicles behind you. There’s absolutely no reason for the sudden breaking with no cars ahead on the road. Shadows, dips in the road, cracks seem to be registered by the car as obstacles.

The vehicle was on cruise control (NOT auto-pilot). Driving on Freeway approximately 82 mph when the vehicle slowed to 60 mph instantly numerous time within my 160 mile drive. There were no vehicles in front or beside me. There were no obstacles in the roadway or on the side of the road. Sunny day with no clouds. There were no warnings lamps or messages that would indicate the car was going to brake. My safety was put at risk if there was another driver behind me, I could have been rear-ended. It Could also had been very dangerous if there was adverse weather. Tesla was not able to recreate the problem and never found any problems with the vehicle. This was not the first time we took the vehicle in for phantom braking. Tesla blamed the driver. I was also told by a tesla representative the the vehicle can brake unexpectedly by sensing a shadow on the road from a cloud. Apparently there is no way to disable this feature. The vehicle has been deemed unsafe to drive by our senior management as this is not the first time this has occurred and Tesla has not remedied the problem.

On a roadtrip between California and Wyoming, the adaptive cruise control, full-self driving, and emergency breaking engaged for absolutely no reason on dozens of occasions - what I understand is termed "phantom breaking." This was so bad that on Sunday, July 10, I noted each severe incident. Some of these occurred with absolutely no traffic in the road, some during busier periods. In each case, it was scary and dangers -- to the point where my dog went flying off the seat. While this was an issue throughout the road trip, I only noted incidents on July 10, but please be aware this happened on many other days as well. Here are the significant incidents on July 10. Please note there were less severe incidents on this day that I didn't note because it would have been too many to count. 12pm mountain time just outside Idaho Falls, ID -- car braked with no warning from 70 MPH to 60 MPH 2pm mountain time - 77 miles outside twin falls, ID 256pm mountain time - right outside twin falls 408pm mountain time - heading south from Twin falls towards Nevada -- the car braked three times in rapid succession 447pm mountain time - heading south past Jackpot NV 450pm Mountain time - same 420pm Pacific time - 16 miles north of Wells NV, braking multiple times in succession 524pm pacific time - just west of Wells, NV, sudden braking from 85 mph to 65 mph 643pm pacific time - half way between Wells, NV and Winnemucca NV

While using Navigate on Autopilot, vehicle applied heavy braking when no obstacle was present. Vehicle was traveling on a flat highway, no vehicles were within eyesight ahead and there was full daylight with the sun positioned behind the vehicle. Vehicle traveling behind us swerved to avoid collision.

My 2022 Tesla Y brakes suddenly when I am not expecting it to. This has happened many times on the freeway in traffic at high speed and often with large trucks behind me. I am concerned that I will get rear-ended by a much larger vehicle. This unexpected sudden braking has also occurred in city traffic. My car does not have full auto pilot- it has the standard driver assist that can't be removed from the car. I have tried to get help from my local Tesla Dealer but the service dept has been unwilling and uninterested in providing any service for this issue.

My car is experiencing phantom braking nearly every time I use cruise control. It only happens when there are no cars or other obstacles in front of me. It happens at various speeds. The braking slows the car to a stop within seconds if I don’t immediately disengage the cruise control, even at highway speeds.

While adaptive cruise control was engaged on highway, it would disengage and harshly break even though there was nothing ahead as an obstacle. If there was a vehicle behind, it would have created a significant change of collision. During a 5+ hour drive, this occurred 20+ times. It seemed to occur when cresting small hills where visibility was somewhat limited ahead and when there were few cars ahead. In a few occurrences, there was a warning chime, but in other cases, it disengaged and braked silently. This just happened yesterday, so it has not been inspected by Tesla.

On several occasions when in Autopilot the car suddenly rapidly brakes and decelerates for no reason. Last time was this past weekend and car behind barely avoided a collision.

When I was on a road trip I had my 2022 Tesla Model Y in autopilot and with out warning it gave myself and my passengers whip lash because it brakes for no reason. On the course of my road-trip it happened more times than we could count. One horrific time was when a white Cadillac Escalade was tailgating me the Tesla threw on the brakes heavily and almost caused the car behind me to hit me. This is very dangerous and the other driver started threatening me and my family harm. I need Tesla to fix this issue with a great sense of urgency. This is extremely dangerous and in my case we were lucky to not sustain any physical harm or death but the chance was and is still great if they do not fix this issue with autopilot braking randomly not for just myself and my family but countless of other Tesla owners that are affected by this scary unsafe issue. Random braking occurred again on 07/05/22 while on a highway with no traffic. This time consumer's model y was on cruise control. Consumer stated he hardly uses autopilot feature because of his past experience. But continues to do this just on a basic cruise control.
