- #11537339August 9, 2023FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
An incident happened today where my leaf would barely accelerate. I had stopped at a traffic light, when the light changed attempted to accelerate away. The car would hardly accelerate and would not go faster than 8 mph. Was able to limp it into a parking lot where I pumped the accelerator several time and it began to run normally.

This car was delivered with no plastic panel covering the area above the driver's feet. The steering column, insulation, wiring, diagnostic port, and structural elements are visible. The selling dealer's initial reaction was that there should be a panel there, but they had not noted it as missing in their inspection. Another, closer, dealer saw photos and agree to install the panel, but did not have the correct part, and told me that another similar car on their lot did not have this panel, so perhaps it was supposed to be missing. My assumption is that it is not safe for these things to be exposed, especially the steering column. I will attach a photo of the area.

I am in possession of NHTSA Recall 22V-048 for my Nissan Leaf, received on 04/05/2023. This recall remedy is in my opinion clearly deficient. Although a owner's manual supplement is included, the supplement does not: (1) replace the current, defective owner's manual (2) provide any way to mark the current manual to indicate that there's a problem and to refer to the supplement or (3) Even identify what page the problematic instructions are on. Even if someone follows the recall notice to the letter (which is to place the supplement with the owner's manual), someone looking up the instructions in the owner's manual for defrosting will not know to refer to the supplement instead of the original manual. This recall needs to be re-done, either by sending an entirely new manual (instructing owners to discard the old one) or at the very least to identify the affected page and provide a sticker to cover up the incorrect information and tell people to refer to the supplement instead.

The resolution for recall 22V-048 provided by Nissan is unacceptable. In order how to properly run the defroster for conditions you have refer to manual or supplement manual. I would expect just turn on defrost and not worry if it going to work in the weather condition I am driving in.

My car got stuck in a snowbank and became unresponsive. I attempted to gently rock it back and forth by putting it into drive and reverse two or three times. The car began to smoke. I took my foot off the accelerator and attempted to exit the vehicle, but the door was locked and did not automatically unlock. I tried to press the child safety lock button in case the child safety lock had been activated, but accidentally pressed the button to open the window. Smoke started coming into the car. I manually unlocked the door, pressed the button to put the car into park. I evacuated the car, and it was engulfed in smoke and making a very loud noise. I had the neighbor call 911 as I left my phone in the car and I was afraid the car would explode. I left the neighbor's house and waited for the fire trucks. My car's wheels were still spinning extremely fast and pieces were coming off of them. A firefighter was able to enter my car in protective gear and turn the car off. The wheels were burned off my car. The car eventually cooled down and I had it towed to the dealership. The dealer does not know why the wheels kept spinning after I was no longer in the car, so we do not know what malfunctioned. My safety was put at risk as I would have been unable to control the car if it had not been stuck in a snowbank. The problem has not been reproduced. The dealer examined the car and has repaired the tires and rims, but still does not give an answer as to why the wheels kept spinning long after I had exited the vehicle. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to the incident.

- #11499635December 31, 2022FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
The car (2023 Nissan Leaf SV Plus) was being driven down an urban street during daylight hours and in good weather (no precipitation). The car was being driven in the middle lane, between the right lane and the left turn lane, and at slow speed, as it had been stopped for a stop light. There was a truck parked in the right lane with a "cherry picker" on it that was involved in tree trimming. The truck was not moving. As the Nissan Leaf started to accelerate from the stoplight, the car suddenly applied it's brakes, rapidly slowing the car to a stop, and almost causing the car following to strike the Leaf from behind.

Vehicle showed a message "Service EV system - Unable to restart after power off". Took to my local Nissan dealer on Oct/21 and had the car serviced and message cleared. On my way back home from dealer, same message showed up again and shut off the car. Next morning the same message remained on dashboard and was unable to start the vehicle. Through an internet research, the same issue is happening with Nissan Leaf all over the world (Japan, UK, etc)

This vehicle failed to have airbags deployed in this accident on 3.23.2022, as photographs that are larger than 10MB will upload, but the Estimate did upload. BUT the car was spun nearly if not fully 360 after hit by a truck in a lane change of a blind spot that spun the car and into concrete barriers. HORRIBLE. Totaled Vehicle. this is the SECOND accident both under USAA on September 03, 2021, with another Police Report and Freeway accident from Front End when freeway traffic came to a sudden stop, and into the barrier. AGAIN no Air Bag Deployed. Warning systems failed.

On my 2022 Leaf I use the epedal system, which is supposed to operate as a one-pedal driving, meaning when you the car is in epedal mode, you can drive the car with one pedal. When you press the accelerator the car will move forward and when you let go of accelerator the car will come to a stop. However, sometimes the car does NOT come to a stop and it will coast as if the epedal is not engaged. This happens regardless of the batteries SOC (state of charge), weather, angle of the road, temperature, or road condition. When epedal is engaged and you lift off the accelerator, the car should always come to a stop, and it doesn't. This is dangerous because there have been many times where I have ran a stop sign or almost hit the car in front of me because I've had to slam on the brakes at the last seconds. Sometimes the epedal system works great and the car will come to a stop, but many times it does not. The braking should always be consistent and it is not, making this feature dangerous to use because you can easily hit the car/something in front of you. I know how the system works because this is my second Nissan Leaf. In my 2018 Nissan Leaf, the epedal was consistent with the braking; it always braked, no matter the situation. The 2022 does not, and it's dangerous. I brought the car to the Nissan dealer and of course they can't find anything wrong with it. There are several others I've found online that have the same issue: epedal braking is NOT consistent and it should be. There are no warning lamps or messages that come up on the dash. I'm asked to provide a date, but this happens every day. Every day the braking is inconsistent. his has been happening since the first day I bought the car in November of 2021.

- #11447113January 11, 2022SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
I had an accident that totaled the Leaf the day after I bought it. It was dark. The road was more congested than usual and a dog ran out into the road. According to eye witnesses, three vehicles including two Honda SUVs (the first vehicle that stated the whole mess didn't stay) managed to brake to a complete stop without rear ending one another. The Nissan Leaf could not brake quickly enough and I rear ended a CR-V with enough force that the Leaf airbags deployed and I could tell the Leaf was totaled at the scene. The emergency braking system never engaged and the brake pedal felt the same from beginning to end. I was not tailgating. The Leaf felt enough like my 2020 Kia Niro that I made the mistake of not being more cautious with a vehicle that was new to me. Bottom line: I expected the Leaf to behave in an emergency the same as a vehicle I had been driving without incident for 18 months and it didn't. My 2020 Kia Niro does not have emergency braking and I hadn't planned to test it out with the Leaf. Being dark, I saw the instant the vehicle in front of me slammed on their brakes and slammed on mine, but it felt the Leaf wasn't slowing down fast enough. Not nearly as quickly as the Honda.

On June 20, 2021, the electric car front hood section area to charge the vehicle flew open while driving the vehicle on the highway. There was no indication that there was a problem with the charging hood at any time.
