Driving on the highway going 65 mph the engine started making a ticking noise and all of the sudden the car died and barely made it to the shoulder and after that the car wouldn’t start or nothing. Now the dealership had the car for a couple weeks already and still no update on when it’s getting fixed

- #11654579April 14, 2025ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, SERVICE BRAKES, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
Good afternoon. Our rental car we picked up from the Denver International Airport on [XXX] had numerous incidents of emergent braking at highway and non highway speeds which were reported to Sixt ( car rental) and documented on the dates in which they occurred, [XXX] (7-8 occurrences ) and [XXX] (3 occurrences-2 after a car wash). On the day in which the first occurrences happened, the car rental company representative from Sixt, 3way connected me with a mechanic from Annex who advised washing the vehicle to ensure the sensors were clean. I did proceed to wash the vehicle on 1.25.25. This same company, Annex Automotive, then evaluated the vehicle on 1.29.25 after emergency breaking occurrences continued of which [XXX] was the worst. On [XXX] there were no vehicles in front of or behind us nor to the sides of us and the roads were completely clear. It was also dark out. Attached you will find evaluation with validation there is a mechanical concern with the vehicle. On [XXX] the extremely unsafe occurrence of emergent braking occurred with skidding tires and the doors locking and unlocking at the same time occurred. This vehicle was completely unsafe to drive. I, as well as my passengers/family, are very lucky the road conditions were moderate on [XXX] and clear on [XXX], or these emergency Breaking issues could have caused a serious accident. There were a total of five of us in the vehicle when all of these occurred. I am from Minnesota and have a Yukon XL so I am comfortable with this vehicle This was the scariest vehicle experience I have ever encountered. The company did tow the vehicle on 1.29.25. The engine failed, specifically the internal engine rod, which apparently came unhinged and caused extensive internal damage. This led to a complete engine failure. The failure was sudden and extreme. The vehicle is currently located at a GMC dealership and remains available for inspection if needed. The dealership also provided oil samples and internal findings to GM for further review. This failure put my safety and my children’s safety at serious risk. I regularly drive this vehicle alone with my children to remote areas—one of the main reasons I purchased this vehicle was because it is marketed as safe, reliable, and built for families. The engine shut off twice while driving before I could get it to a shop, and I was very fortunate it didn't happen on the highway or in a location where I couldn’t pull over safely. Had this occurred at high speeds or in heavy traffic, it could have resulted in a crash or left us stranded in a dangerous situation.Yes. The issue was first diagnosed as catastrophic engine failure by an independent auto shop. They advised me to take the vehicle directly to the GMC dealer. Once inspected, the GMC dealership confirmed full engine failure, radiator failure, and additional issues. They explicitly told me not to drive the vehicle again due to the severity of the internal engine damage. The vehicle is still at their shop- three weeks later. I’m not sure if the manufacturer (GM) has physically inspected the vehicle. However, the dealership has submitted documentation and internal engine testing results—including oil samples—to GM on my behalf. To my knowledge, there has been no inspection by police or insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps, error messages, or dashboard alerts before or during the failure. The only symptom was a very subtle and barely audible noise that appeared shortly before the failure. Within approximately 40 miles, that sound escalated dramatically into a loud rattling. The engine shut off on its own twi

While driving with my cruise control set to 75, my vehicle began losing speed and power for no apparent reason. I was able to fortunately pull over on the shoulder of the road when the engine turned off without pushing the stop button. At this point I put the vehicle in park and tried to restart the vehicle with no luck. It was at this time I contacted my husband and he was able to come load the vehicle on a trailer to tow to our GMC Dealership. This happened on January 28, 2025. There was 60,407 miles on the odometer. The dealership was able to tell us that the motor seized due to a bearing failure. I am glad that I was able to get over to the shoulder of the road and was not in the middle of road construction. This was a scary situation that could have been much worse.

Vehicle went to GM for recall repairs on 02/24/25 the morning after when I cranked my car it was dead. Jumped the car off then began hearing a "clicking noise" GM advised I replace my serpentine belt as they noticed it needed replacement when doing the recall repairs. 02/26/25 serpentine belt was replaced but car still seemed to have power issues when cranking. 02/27/25 car barely cranked then while driving down the highway I lost all power and power steering to the vehicle. There was no warning, no check engine lights etc. The screen went black then car shut off then the screen said "press start to restart." I was BARELY able to get the vehicle safely off the road with vehicles in front, behind, and in the other lanes. It could have caused a fatal accident. GMC still has my vehicle with NO UPDATE on replacement engine timeline.

Recently, while driving my 2023 GMC Yukon Denali XL Ultimate (with only 19,457 miles) on the expressway, my vehicle suddenly lost all power and steering at high speed—without any warning lights, noises, or alerts. One moment everything was normal, the next I was gliding in silence, completely powerless in a 6,000 lb vehicle surrounded by fast-moving traffic. I was nearly sideswiped multiple times as I tried desperately to avoid a potentially deadly accident. This failure wasn’t just mechanical—it was terrifying. And it could have cost me my life. What happened next only made things worse. GM Roadside Assistance left me stranded on the side of the road for nearly 4 hours. Multiple tow trucks were sent, but none had the right equipment because the vehicle could not be put into neutral due to the engine failure. I was left vulnerable, frustrated, and utterly unsupported while GM fumbled through their response.

1) The engine began making unusual noises. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer. It is currently at Zimbrick Eastside in Madison Wisconsin. 2) The problem was noticed prior to my family being put at risk only because I noticed the noise happening while we were parked. 3) The problem has been confirmed. The dealer is doing a complete engine replacement. However, as of today, it has been at their location for over 30 days. 4) To my knowledge the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or any other 3rd party representatives. As of today, there has been no correspondence between myself and the manufacturer. 5) There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms prior to the problem. The problem first occurred on Saturday [XXX]. The vehicle has 19462 miles and we are the first owners. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On [XXX], my wife and our children were driving back home from Barstow when the vehicle stalled on the [XXX] freeway near Colton, CA. While driving at approximately 50–65 mph, we heard a clanking noise coming from the engine, followed by multiple warning and maintenance lights illuminating on the dash. The vehicle then lost all acceleration power and shut off, leaving my wife and children stranded in the middle lane of moving traffic. All of this happened in a matter of seconds. This situation quickly became a life-threatening incident. Vehicles, including large semi-trucks, were swerving and honking to avoid colliding with our stalled Yukon. Fearing for my family’s safety, I was forced to exit the vehicle in the middle of traffic and physically push the Yukon to the side of the freeway, while trying to keep my wife and children calm inside the vehicle. The panic and distress this caused my family—especially my wife, whose anxiety skyrocketed—is beyond unacceptable. Highway law enforcement arrived and remained there until we were able to get a safety tow off the freeway and out to a service shop with GMC. Just before that, we had received our vehicle back on February 20th, 2025 after being with the GMC dealership since January 3rd, 2025, for engine replacement. The contact owns a 2021 GMC Yukon XL. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shuddered. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the lifters had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that only one side of the engine lifters replacement was covered. The vehicle was repaired accordingly. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving 55-60 MPH, the engine started shuddering. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The messages "Service ESC", "Forward Collision System Unavailable", "System Failure", and other unknown messages were displayed. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired at the contact's expense. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE25001 (Engine, Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

The car has made a high pitched metallic rattle on cold start ever since I received it. I have taken it into the dealership multiple times for this and have had the lifters in the engine replaced but they never addressed the other noise, which I have video evidence of. The car died at 24,740 miles on the odometer in the middle of a highway in the middle of nowhere. The vehicle started to feel like it was braking on acceleration, there were no warning lights. The vehicle just lost acceleration power and I had to coast to the shoulder. Luckily I had time to pull over without interference from other traffic. Once on the side of the road I tried to crank the car again and a very loud metallic sound happened that sounded like I threw a wrench in a fan. The car lost electrical power very shortly after. I called onstar for help and she asked if I could shift the car into neutral which I could not. They had problems finding anyone that wasn’t hours out that could come tow my car and suggested that I try to find an alternate method of transportation since a wrecker service probably wouldn’t transport my entire family. Uber was not around to get me, Lyft was not around to get me and there was no taxi service. I had to rely on the local fire department to rescue us as it was hours with myself, my two children and my dog on the side of the road in 90F heat. Once at the dealership they confirmed it was indeed a catastrophic engine failure and I am currently waiting months for a back ordered engine with a rental I’m paying partially out of pocket for, in a car that’s entirely way too small for my family with no ETA on the engine in sight. I know multiple people personally who this has also happened to, same exact scenario and same exact engine just different model years.

Vehicle started making noise and idling rough 1-2days after receiving it back from oil change. It was absolutely fine and out of nowhere this happens. I’m great with cars and this is my 5th GMC Yukon and I bought this one at 0 mileage so I am very familiar with this car. There is absolutely no explainable reason my car is doing this I had it inspected and the dealer told me this has been happening lately to a lot of the gmc Yukons and I would need major engine repair for a brand new car!!! Over 20k in repairs and parts. I have 6 children and we have had to abandon the vehicle on Christmas Day to drive our old 2019 GMC Yukon which I think is starting to sound a lot like the 2023 under the hood! It’s roughly idling to. I’m afraid we might be taking the bus if I don’t pay 20k. I looked to see if there were recalls but found none. there is no way engine failure should just pop up after we spent tons of money keeping these cars in perfect shape and only being serviced at the dealership. This should be investigated and repair records pulled to find people who are not aware

The 6.2 engine started ticking now. It needs to be rebuilt. It's ridiculous. We service it every 3000 miles. Our 2017 Sierra had a valve stick that ruined the cam. It has the same 6.2 engine with only 78,000 miles on it.

Car consuming too much oil, engine oil very low every 2000 miles. GM claims that 2000 is acceptable but new oil should go to 4000 at the least. Will not do anything to the engine or pistons and claim that car has too many engine hours due to idling which I do not do. They are unwilling to fix this problem, been dealing with them for over a year and my warranty is about to expire. There are many complaints online about this same issue.

The check engine light would intermittently turn on since purchasing my brand new vehicle in 2022. The service center kept it for several weeks, but could not find a problem. They said it was a “bad batch of gas” the first time I brought it in. The second time they said it was an engine misfire. They said as long as the light flashes but doesn’t stay on, it is not concerning. March 13, 2025 as I was driving my car down the road my car suddenly shifted to neutral. I had to coast to the side of the road (with my children in the car). I turned my car off and it would not turn back on. I had it towed to the dealership and they said the engine had failed. They replaced it, but could not tell me if they replaced it with the same version engine or not. The dealership did not supply any paperwork of the repair when I picked up my vehicle.
