Important Warnings and Owner Information

Audi has provided several critical pieces of information for owners regarding the navigation map update process:

• The full navigation map data was available on the myAudi website (www.audiusa.com/myAudi) for download before March 2020. However, the myAudi site was turned off for myAudi 2.0. "There is currently no timeline for the map download feature to be added back to the myAudi website. Until it is added back to the website, there will be no solution for the customer to download the data independently. The full navigation map data will only be available to the service department."
• "The customer must NEVER be charged for the map data on the SD card." Dealers are instructed to consider the map data as a shop tool.
• "DO NOT install the map data via the red engineering menu of the MMI until AFTER the map activation is performed via ODIS >> Flash."
• "The customer will not be billed for the data used when performing the OTA map update, but the customer must have an active Audi connect subscription to use the OTA map update feature in the MMI."
• During the map update process, if the vehicle is turned off, the MMI will continue to update in the background for approximately 30 minutes. The update will automatically resume on the next ignition cycle.
• If performing an SD card update, "Please do not remove SD 1!" during the update process.

Technical Background

Audi's new MIB navigation system allows customers to update their vehicle's navigation system independently. As of March 2020, map updates are primarily available in the MMI via Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. For 2015-2016 Audi A3 models with MIB1, OTA is not an option, and updates must be done via the SD card method. Map Update Methods

Map Updates via SD Card

For MIB1 and MIB2 vehicles, map updates are free for the first 2.5 years after the vehicle's production date, covering the next five releases. After this period, map updates will no longer work in the MMI without purchasing activations. MIB1 and MIB2 customers can purchase activations via Audi accessories to enable updates. The dealer can purchase the necessary map data on an SD card.

Map Updates via Over-The-Air (OTA) Update

• MIB1: OTA updates are not available.
• MIB2: OTA is available on some vehicles, starting with MY17 (excluding TT, R8, and A6/A7 C7PI). Updates are pushed out in waves, typically around CW22 and CW45. Customers must have valid navigation map activations to see OTA notifications and can select regions for updates.
• MIB2+: OTA is available with an active Audi connect subscription. Updates are rolled out four times a year (CW12, CW24, CW36, CW48). Customers cannot choose regions; updates are automatically received for the three nearest regions where the vehicle is operated.
• MIB3: OTA is available with an active Audi connect subscription. Updates are rolled out monthly for regions within which the vehicle is regularly driven. If the vehicle is driven outside the home region, new regions will be included in the next OTA update after eight ignition cycles. Up to five separate smaller regions can be updated incrementally.

For all MIB infotainment systems, map updates via the myAudi website were retired as of March 2020. Dealers can order the appropriate SD card through ETKA. A 16GB or larger SD card is typically required for full map updates, with 32GB recommended for MIB3.

To perform an SD card update, you will need:

• A blank SD card that is 16GB or larger. For MIB3 map updates, a 32GB card may be required. A 16GB card may contain slightly less than 16GB of usable space, necessitating a larger card for a full map update.
• The SD card must be formatted to FAT/FAT32/exFAT. Mac-formatted SD cards will not work. Supported SD card types include SD (FAT/FAT32) for 4GB and less, SDHC (FAT/FAT32) for 4GB/8GB/16GB, and SDXC (exFAT only) for 16GB/32GB/64GB and higher.

Repair Procedure Summary

1. Insert SD Card: Insert the downloaded map update SD card into the MMI main unit. The update does not start automatically.

5. Completion: The update can take 60-90 minutes with an SD card, potentially longer with DVD or USB. The vehicle can be shut off during the update, and it will continue in the background for about 30 minutes, resuming on the next ignition cycle. Once complete, the file transfer icon will disappear, and a confirmation message, "Component successfully updated: Navigation database New: Version [Year]" will appear (Figure 7 in the TSB).
6. Verify Version: Confirm the update by checking the MMI Version Information screen (Figure 8 in the TSB). The menu path is MENU >> Setup MMI >> Version Information for A3/A6/A7, or MENU >> Settings >> Left Option >> System maintenance >> Version Information for TT3/R8NF/Q7NF/B9 A4. Review the calendar year listing under each region to ensure the latest update is shown.
