Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has reported a significant return to profitability for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, ending June 30, 2026. The company posted a consolidated operating profit of ¥77.9 billion, a substantial improvement of ¥157 billion compared to the previous year. Despite this positive financial turnaround, Nissan has adjusted its full-year sales volume forecast, primarily due to market conditions in China.

Strong Financial Performance in Q1

Nissan's financial results for Q1 FY2026 show consolidated net revenue reaching ¥2.964 trillion, an increase of ¥257 billion year-over-year. Global sales for the quarter totaled 701,000 units. The company's net income also moved into positive territory at ¥3.8 billion, improving by ¥119.5 billion from the prior year.

This improved performance was driven by several factors, including reductions in manufacturing and vehicle costs, favorable foreign exchange rates (JPY 160/USD and JPY 185/EUR), and better sales performance. Disciplined cost management and one-time gains related to FY2025 U.S. tariffs also contributed to the positive operating profit. The Re:Nissan plan specifically generated an additional ¥60 billion in savings during the first quarter, contributing to the strong Nissan Q1 2026 financial results.

Revised Sales Outlook and Market Dynamics

While Nissan reaffirmed its overall FY2026 operating profit outlook, the company revised its sales volume forecast for the fiscal year. The projected sales volume has been lowered from 3.3 million units to 3.15 million units. This adjustment largely reflects the challenging business environment in China, where Nissan is implementing a strategy to rebalance and revamp its operations, including accelerating New Energy Vehicle (NEV) momentum with models like the N6, N7, NX8, and Frontier Pro.

Outside of China, Nissan anticipates year-over-year growth in sales volumes. The company noted continued momentum in key markets such as the U.S., where its "Built in the U.S. for the U.S." strategy has led to 16 consecutive months of year-over-year retail sales growth and nearly 10 percent sales growth in the past quarter. In Japan, new models like the Kicks and Elgrand have garnered significant customer interest, with cumulative orders reaching 11,000 and 8,000 units, respectively, indicating early signs of recovery.

Nissan acknowledges external challenges for the remainder of FY2026, including rising raw material costs and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. However, favorable foreign exchange rates and the Q1 one-time gains are expected to help mitigate these headwinds.

Ongoing Cost Reduction and Competitiveness Efforts

The Re:Nissan plan continues to be a central pillar of the company's strategy, with cost-reduction initiatives yielding tangible results. The ¥60 billion in savings achieved in Q1 were primarily due to variable cost reductions. These efforts span manufacturing, purchasing, and research and development, supported by strict expense management.

Nissan is focused on strengthening its competitiveness across key markets and adapting strategies to changing conditions. The company aims to improve its cost structure and become more agile, with a long-term goal of creating value for customers, enhancing profitability, and generating free cash flow, all contributing to positive Nissan Q1 2026 financial results.

For Nissan owners and prospective buyers, these results indicate the company's financial health is improving, supported by strategic cost management and strong performance in markets like the U.S. and Japan. While the revised sales outlook for China highlights ongoing market shifts, Nissan's focus on new products and efficiency measures aims to ensure stability and future growth.
