BMW has released Service Information Bulletin (SIB) 28 02 24 to address a potential issue affecting the double clutch transmission and transfer case in certain 2023-2024 BMW X1 and X2 models. This bulletin, which is Revision 3 and replaces an earlier version from July 2024, outlines a service action to prevent wear in these components.

This repair is considered "Mobile Friendly," meaning it can be performed efficiently. Dealers are instructed to complete this procedure on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. For vehicles already delivered, the repair should be performed during the next service visit if the campaign status indicates a remedy is available.

Affected Models

This service action applies to the following BMW models:

  • U11: X1 Sports Activity Vehicle
  • U10: X2 Sports Activity Coupe

Situation

The core problem identified is that micro-movements, combined with frictional corrosion, can lead to increased wear on the longitudinal splined connection between the double clutch transmission (DCT) and the transfer box. This wear could potentially impact the long-term durability and performance of these critical drivetrain components.

Correction

To resolve this issue and mitigate the wear, the correction involves adding spacers at the connection point between the double clutch transmission and the transfer box. These spacers are designed to decrease the micro-movements, thereby preventing further frictional corrosion and wear on the splined connection. This service action ensures the proper function and longevity of the drivetrain.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair process for the BMW X1 double clutch transmission rework involves several steps to install the necessary spacers. Technicians are directed to follow specific repair instructions to ensure proper execution.

First, the procedure requires following Repair Instruction 31 60 004, which details the removal and installation/replacement of the right output shaft. During this step, the starter motor may need to be removed or moved aside to access one of the bolts required for spacer installation.

If Repair Instruction 31 60 004 is not available, an alternative is to use Repair Instruction 27 10 110, which covers replacing the radial shaft sealing ring for the connecting shaft on the right side. However, it's important to note that, contrary to the typical steps in 27 10 110, it is not necessary to replace the shaft sealing ring with part number 27 10 8627023 for this specific service action.

After removing the necessary components, the two bolts on the transfer case are removed. Washers are then installed between the link and the transfer case. It may be necessary to slightly push the transfer case to the side to facilitate the installation of these washers. Finally, the right axle is reinstalled, and the new bolts are tightened to a specification of 100 Nm plus a 90° torque angle.

Required Parts

To perform the BMW X1 double clutch transmission rework, specific parts are required. Dealers must use the VIN/chassis number to determine the exact part numbers applicable to each vehicle, ensuring compatibility with its specific equipment and options. The following parts are listed in the bulletin:

Part Number Description Quantity
07 11 9 909 844 Hex Bolt (M12x1.5x90) 1
07 14 9 894 132 Multi-purpose bolt ASA (M12x90x1.5) 2
27 10 0 907 707 Retaining ring 1
37 14 6 869 771 Thread-tapping hexagon bolt 1
31 20 6 866 022 Shouldered bolt with compression spring 1
22 11 8 876 816 Adapter washer kit 2
33 30 6 760 587 Flanged hexagon nut 1
31 10 6 876 027 ASA bolt 1
07 11 9 909 527 Hexagon bolt 1
07 11 9 906 927 Hexagon bolt 1
31 10 6 876 027 ASA-Bolt (M10x55) 1
33 30 6 760 587 Hex nut with flange (M10-10 ZNS3) 1

Additional materials such as fluids, lubricants, one-time use screws, nuts, and seals, not explicitly listed, should be selected from the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETK) or other approved BMW resources as needed for the specific vehicle type.

Important Notes for Owners and Dealers

  • Pre-Delivery Completion: This service action must be completed on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. If a vehicle has already been delivered, the procedure should be performed during its next shop visit, provided the campaign has a remedy available.
  • Shaft Sealing Ring: When performing the repair, it is not necessary to replace the shaft sealing ring with part number 27 10 8627023, even if an alternative repair instruction suggests it.

Claim Information

Dealers can claim reimbursement for this service action using Repair Code 0028240100, titled "U10 U11 Reworking DKG connection - transfer box." There are two primary labor operation codes depending on when the repair is performed:

  • Work Package #1 (00 75 871): For completion before the first vehicle delivery or if the vehicle is already in the workshop.
  • Work Package #2 (00 75 284): For vehicles arriving at the service center with this service action open, and no other main work is being performed or claimed during that visit.

Only one of these flat-rate labor operation codes can be used for claim submission. Dealers should reference the SIB number and the work package number (e.g., B28 02 24 WP 1) in their technician notes and claim comments. Reimbursement for bulk supply materials is available under Sublet Code 4, up to $25.00.

For additional information regarding Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement, dealers should refer to SI B01 29 16.
