Symptoms

Cause

The root cause of the "rattling noise" is identified as too much play in the three mounting clips that secure the rear center safety belt feed trim. This looseness allows the trim to vibrate and create the audible interference.

BMW states that this repair can be completed with the trim remaining in the vehicle. There is no need to remove the entire rear center seat safety belt assembly, simplifying the repair process.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair outlined in BMW Service Information Bulletin SIB 51 06 24 involves several steps to eliminate the "rattling noise". First, the safety belt feed trim is unclipped from the headliner and pulled down. The three mounting clips are then removed from the trim.

Technicians will prepare six felt strips, each approximately 6 inches (15 cm) long. Two of these felt strips are bonded to the top surface where each of the three mounting clips will be inserted. Any damaged mounting clips should be replaced at this stage. After applying the felt tape, the three mounting clips are reinserted, ensuring there is no longer any free play. Finally, the safety belt feed trim is clipped back into the headliner, and the vehicle is reassessed to confirm the "rattling noise" has been resolved.

The primary material required for this repair is felt tape. The specific part number for the felt tape is 54 20 8 230 452 (Felt Tape, 30 x 15 mm). Up to three mounting clips, part number 51 43 7 001 491, may also be needed if any are found to be damaged during the repair process.
