2009-2010 Audi A3/TT DSG Transmission Stall Investigation

Symptoms

Owners of affected vehicles may experience a sudden loss of motive power, where the transmission abruptly shifts to neutral. This condition is often accompanied by the "selector lever position indicator within the instrument panel will flash." Additionally, the "depress brake pedal indicator light will be illuminated," prompting the driver to apply the brakes.

Some owners also reported instances of "harsh/jerky shifting," particularly at very low speeds. While this specific symptom was not linked to the recall, it was addressed through a separate customer service program.

NHTSA's Findings So Far

The 2009 Audi A3 investigation (PE09035) focused on vehicles equipped with Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmissions. These 6-speed automatic gearboxes utilize two wet-running clutches and are electrohydraulically operated by a Mechatronic control unit.

The investigation revealed a potential defect in the wiring harnesses of the DSG gearbox temperature sensors. Specifically, the connector wires may have been insufficiently crimped by a supplier during a limited production period. This flaw could cause the temperature sensor to falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature.

If a false high-temperature reading occurs, the system's safety protocols are triggered. Initially, engine torque is ramped down. If the false temperature reading persists, the Mechatronic unit responds by opening the clutch, resulting in an interruption of motive power.

Scope

The investigation covered approximately 16,000 model year (MY) 2009 and 2010 Volkswagen (Eos, Jetta, and GTI) and Audi (A3 and TT/TT Roadster) vehicles. These vehicles were built between September 2008 and August 2009.

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) identified 40 complaints related to the temperature sensor defect. Volkswagen received 139 complaints, with 7 overlapping with ODI's reports, totaling 172 complaints related to this condition across both ODI and Volkswagen.

Status

This 2009 Audi A3 investigation (PE09035) concluded with a recall campaign. Volkswagen submitted a Defect Information Report to NHTSA on August 20, 2009, resulting in NHTSA Recall No. 09V-333. The manufacturer's internal recall numbers were Volkswagen Recall No. 37E3/S7 and Audi Recall No. 37E4/J7.
