Understanding the Nissan Rear Door Alert System

The Nissan Rear Door Alert system is designed to remind drivers to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle. This system does not directly detect passengers or objects. Instead, it monitors when a rear door is opened or closed, inferring that something might be in the rear seat.

The system functions under specific conditions to provide an alert, helping to prevent situations where items or occupants might be unintentionally left behind. This bulletin provides supplementary information for inspection, diagnosis, and repair related to this system.

How to Activate and Deactivate the Rear Door Alert

Drivers can manage the Nissan Rear Door Alert system through the vehicle's information display. To access these settings:

1. Navigate to "Settings" in the vehicle information display using the steering wheel's scroll wheel or arrow buttons.
2. Select "Vehicle Settings."
3. Choose "Rear Door Alert."

From this menu, you have several options to configure the system:

• To turn the system ON:
  • "Horn & Alert": If selected, the vehicle's horn will sound, and an alert message will appear on the vehicle information display (as shown in Figure 1 of the original bulletin).
  • "Alert Only": This option will only display an alert message on the vehicle information display, without sounding the horn.
• To turn the system OFF:
  • Select "OFF" to completely disable the system (as shown in Figure 2 of the original bulletin).

These options allow drivers to customize how the Rear Door Alert system interacts with them, based on their preferences.

Vehicle Information Display Messages

When the Rear Door Alert system is active, specific messages may appear on your vehicle's information display to prompt action. These messages are crucial for the driver to understand the system's status.

• If the rear door alert is activated, the display will show "Rear Door Alert is activated" (Figure 3 in the original bulletin).
• You can select "Dismiss Message" to clear the alert.
• Alternatively, you can select "Disable Alert" to temporarily disable the rear door alert for the current trip.
• If no selection is made, the message will disappear after a short period.

Upon exiting the vehicle with the rear door alert active, especially if a rear door was not opened after arriving at the destination, you might see the message "Check Rear Seat for All Articles" (Figure 4 in the original bulletin). If the horn alert is enabled, it will also sound.

Rear Door Alert System Operation

The Rear Door Alert system activates and deactivates based on specific conditions related to rear door usage and driving patterns.

Conditions for Activation

The system will activate if a rear door is opened and closed, and the vehicle is then driven within approximately 10 minutes. Once activated, the alert will engage on every subsequent trip unless it is manually deactivated.

The alert can be deactivated by:

• Opening a rear door shortly after arriving at a destination.
• Selecting "Disable Alert" from the vehicle information display.

Conditions for Non-Activation

The system will not activate if a rear door is used, but the vehicle is not driven within approximately 10 minutes of the door being opened. This prevents unnecessary alerts if the rear door was opened for reasons other than placing an occupant or item in the back seat before driving.

Important Considerations for Technicians

Nissan advises technicians regarding diagnostics related to the Nissan Sentra Rear Door Alert system. It is crucial to thoroughly review all information in this bulletin and verify any abnormal concerns before considering replacement of the Body Control Module (BCM). Do not replace the BCM for a rear door alert concern unless all information in this bulletin has been reviewed and the concern has been verified to be abnormal. This guidance helps prevent unnecessary parts replacement and ensures proper diagnosis.
