Audi Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 2012749/15 addresses customer concerns regarding moisture accumulation in the exterior lights of various 2021-2022 Audi models. This bulletin, revised on February 17, 2021, supersedes previous TSB 94 19-18 dated December 6, 2019, and provides guidance on distinguishing normal condensation from issues requiring inspection.

Symptoms

Owners may observe condensation on the inside of various exterior light lenses. This includes the headlight, taillight, fog light, side marker light, front turn signal, daytime running lights, and/or third brake light lens.

Diagnosis and Trigger Conditions

Audi explains that the headlight ventilation system is designed to allow air from the exterior to pass through the assemblies for pressure compensation. This creates different climate zones within the light, leading to condensation under certain conditions.

Condensation is most common in cold and wet weather, after a car wash, or during temperature changes. It's often more visible on clear glass lenses. Importantly, this type of moisture does not affect the headlight function or light performance and does not cause corrosion or damage to other parts. Residual condensation, as shown in Figure 2B of the TSB, may be normal depending on ambient conditions.

To determine if the condensation is normal, drive the vehicle for 10 minutes with the main beam on, maintaining speeds consistently over 45 mph. This allows the ventilation system to function properly and clear the light emission surface (Figure 2A).

Repair Procedure Summary

If water drops or condensation are still present on the light emission surface (Figure 3A) after performing the clearing procedure, a more thorough inspection is required. Technicians should inspect the headlamp assembly for potential root causes, which include:

  • A missing cover.
  • A damaged seal.
  • A clogged drain.
  • Outside influence.

If the headlamp assembly itself is not the root cause (e.g., a clogged drain or missing access cover), the assembly should be dried with compressed air. Additionally, a visual inspection of electrical connectors and any control modules attached to the headlight should be performed. If corrosion is found in these components, they must be repaired or replaced according to the repair manual.

All repair documentation should follow the instructions outlined in TSB 2061922, titled "94 How to properly document optical concerns for headlights and tail lights."

Important Warnings

Owners should be aware that this TSB is informational only and is not applicable to any Audi Warranty. The presence of moisture that does not affect light function or performance, such as the Audi e-tron light condensation described, is often considered normal.

Owner Action

If you observe condensation in your 2021-2022 Audi vehicle's exterior lights, first attempt to clear it by driving with your main beams on for 10 minutes at speeds over 45 mph. If persistent water drops remain, or if you have concerns about the Audi e-tron light condensation, it is recommended to visit an authorized Audi dealer for inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is condensation in my 2021-2022 Audi's headlights normal?
Yes, according to Audi Technical Service Bulletin 2012749/15, some condensation in the exterior lights of 2021-2022 Audi vehicles is considered normal. This is due to the headlight's ventilation system, which allows for pressure compensation and can lead to moisture buildup under certain conditions.
When should I be concerned about Audi e-tron light condensation?
You should be concerned if water drops or significant condensation remain on the light emission surface after driving for 10 minutes with the main beams on at speeds over 45 mph. This could indicate an issue like a missing cover, damaged seal, or clogged drain, and warrants a dealer inspection.
Will Audi cover the repair for light condensation under warranty?
Technical Service Bulletin 2012749/15 states that it is informational only and not applicable to any Audi Warranty. Normal condensation that does not affect light function or performance is typically not covered, but specific issues like damaged seals or corrosion may be addressed depending on your vehicle's warranty status and the nature of the defect.
