The engine maintenance required sign popped up on my 2021 Toyota Corolla and took it to a dealer to get it diagnosed and they reported back it was the coolant bypass valve. They want 1,000$ to fix the issue even tho the person I was dealing with at the dealer shop said it’s happening to all the corollas from 30,000 miles to 50,000 miles .

Dear Better Business Bureau, I am filing a formal complaint against Toyota Motor North America regarding a serious and unresolved safety defect in my 2024 Toyota Corolla LE (VIN [XXX]). The vehicle experienced two incidents of sudden unintended acceleration—the second, on [XXX], resulted in a collision. Despite my repeated efforts to resolve the issue, Toyota has failed to respond adequately or provide critical diagnostic data. In both incidents ([XXX] and [XXX]), while stopped at a red light, the vehicle suddenly surged forward despite my foot being on the brake. On [XXX] this caused a collision. My vehicle has remained undrivable since. Toyota conducted a diagnostic inspection on May 29 under Case #[XXX]. I’ve repeatedly requested access to the raw data from this inspection to understand the defect, but Toyota has not responded. Emails to the assigned case manager, Ms. Cynthia Ware, have gone unanswered. When I was directed to reply to a support email, it bounced back as a “do-not-reply” address, redirecting me to a login page which falsely claimed I had no active cases. This created an endless communication loop. Toyota’s lack of transparency and support is unacceptable—especially given the severity of the issue and the fact that the vehicle is still under warranty. I am requesting: Immediate release of the raw diagnostic data from the May 29 inspection A prompt resolution, including full repair, replacement, or buyback Clear, responsive communication from an authorized representative This is not only a financial burden, but a serious safety risk. I respectfully request BBB’s assistance in securing a resolution and holding Toyota accountable. Thank you for your time.

This complaint concerns two separate incidents, both involving defective interior door handles. First, in 2023, the driver side driver door handle broke abruptly when the driver attempted to exit the vehicle. As a result, the driver, [XXX] , was trapped in the vehicle and required someone else to let him out from the outside. This was repaired privately at substantial cost to the owner. Then, the exact same thing happened to the passenger side front seat interior door handle in January 2025. The handle mechanism seems to be made of cheap plastic and seems to have broken, preventing the passenger from exiting the vehicle at all and leaving them effectively trapped in the front seat. This has been a major issue recently when transporting family members to the hospital, as time was lost when they tried to get out of the driver side passenger door and found that the door handle mechanism was inoperable. The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Corolla. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V865000 (Air Bags); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that they were unable to unscrew the rear screws on the seat to remove the seat because the seat failed to move forward to access the rear screws. The dealer stated that the seat bracket had to be fractured and then replaced to be able to complete the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was informed the contact that the dealer would charge more for the additional damage. The manufacturer opened a case. The failure mileage was 94,576. Parts distribution disconnect.

The windshield wipers stop in the middle of the windshield at times when set to intermittent. Sometimes they will not shut off when they are turned off. This can be a hazard while you are driving and you never know when it will happen.

The driver’s side door would not close because the latch on the body of the car to which the door attaches fell off. The dealer’s body shop stated that they have never seen this happen before and that the cost to repair including parts and labor would be $4894.52. The car was not safe to drive unless the door latch was replaced.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle started to shake and vibrate abnormally. The contact stated that after stopping to inspect the vehicle, the contact discovered that the rear passenger’s side tire had experienced a sidewall blowout and tread separation. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local Toyota dealer was notified of the failure. The tire manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 53,253.

I am writing to express my concern regarding the quality of the paint on my 2019 Toyota Corolla. The paint has been peeling for the past two years, and the issue has progressively worsened. Despite taking good care of the vehicle, the paint is deteriorating at an unusual rate for a car of this age. I believe this may be a defect related to the original paint quality, and I would appreciate it if you could inspect the vehicle in this class and advise whether this could be covered under Toyota warranty or any goodwill repair program. My son drove the car to the store less than 2 miles from the house and the airbag light came on and stayed while he was driving. He looked up the light in the owners manual and it said take vehicle to the Toyota dealer immediately! I know multiple cars we have owned in the past have had airbag recalls. I can not remember if this one has ever been recalled and repaired in the past. I attached the photos of the light and the manual.

I have an error that appeared displaying “Engine Maintenance Required” after some investigation snd research, I have noticed that this is a common issue associated with the OEM Engine Coolant Bypass Valve. This occurred as I was driving home from work when I was driving down the freeway, I did not run into any obstacles or have an accident, it appeared out of thin air.
