- #11419875June 7, 2021ENGINE, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
RE: NHTSA Recall Number 20V-705. The engine value cover gasket leaks oil onto the alternator. My engine has been smoking for six months (January 2021-present). This problem was not repaired correctly under a previous recall in 2014. In 2016 the problem persisted and my car shut off unexpectedly, causing me to stop in the high speed lane of the Massachusetts Turnpike, nearly resulting in a major accident and fatality. The value gasket and alternator was replaced the day after the incident but the problem has emerged again. I have received two notices from Hyundai in last few months under recall 197 stating that a "remedy is being prepared" following the NHTSA recall order of November 2020, but to date no remedy has been noticed. Hyundai customer service suggests that I pay for the repair myself at the dealer and seek reimbursement from Hyundai America myself but I lack funds to do so. As stated, the engine is smoking, the check engine light is on, and I fear for my family's safety. This vehicle is needed for transportation to work and to purchase essentials. Hyundai's response to this issue has not been timely. By this complaint, I am respectfully requesting the NHTSA to order Hyundai to directly reimburse my local dealer for this critical repair so as to remedy this dangerous situation. - #11420044June 7, 2021ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
This is a complaint about the failure of the Hyundai company to respond in a timely matter to a recall issued in Nov. 2020 (NHTSA 20V-705/Hyundai Recall 197) which can affect the alternator and electrical system of the vehicle. The company has not yet issued a resolution and so the dealers will not perform the necessary repairs needed to avoid a breakdown. This is the second recall issued for the exact same problem. Hyundai stated they would issue a remedy but have failed to do so and it has been 8 months. I am asking NHTSA to require the company to provide a remedy so as to avoid a potentially dangerous system failure. I have been through an electrical system failure once already while in traffic due to this precise problem. It could have been deadly. Something needs to be done and Hyundai is dragging its feet. Please intervene.

I have received three recall letters form Hyundai VeraCruz regarding an interim recall in January 2021, March 2021 and May 2021. I had the vehicle in for mechanical repairs to the rear brake system in Late February 2021 and was informed there was several leaks noted at the time. Within the next few weeks, I noted that when accelerating onto the highway that the battery light, security light and seatbelt light would flash for about 10 seconds but then go off. . I waited to hear on a repair solution from Hyundai but only received another interim letter in March. In the end of April, I had spoken to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle ,Auto Warehouse of Brighton, and was told Hyundai would have to repair due to the recall. I have contacted three Hyundai service centers and have been told that they are unable to repair under the recall as there has not been a remedy for the recall. On Sunday, May 30, the vehicle was making an odd noise and I asked a mechanic friend to look at it. While inspecting, he stated the bearings in the alternator seized. The vehicle is now not functional, Hyundai Customer Care cannot provide a possible date for the recall to be remedied. This recall has been going on now since November 2020 and is unresolved. I am without a vehicle due to this and have not been provided any possible timeline when the issue may be resolved.
