Dear NHTSA: I recently bought a HYUNDAI SONATA 2013 I got the NC vehicle inspection PASSED the same day. The car has been working perfectly. But, my granddaughter, XXXX, who I share the car with got a terrible experience last Thursday [XXX], she was driving to her job around 2:30 PM when suddenly the car just died, without any light showing on the screen. She was in panic in the middle of a big road with all the cars passing by. She used beach chairs so the others could know the car was dead. A police officer stopped and helped her move the car out of the road so a towing can pick up the car. This was not only a missed day at job for her, it could have ended in a terrible accident. Here are some pictures of the awful day. The car was towed to a mechanic who immediately said this is an engine manufacturer problem of your brand. I am the third owner of the car so no communication has been sent to me saying this car has an ENGINE RECALL that could fire at any moment. This is insane and I felt totally drowned by your brand. Again, no light was showing on the screen, nothing…. My car is at the Hyundai Keffer dealer at Charlotte and they said the recall for engine is closed and that will not cover the repair. I do not have money for a repair. Please help me. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- #11600492July 9, 2024FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
On July 8th 2024 I was driving my already troubled 2012 Hyundai Sonata when I started to smell strong odor of unburnt gasoline which immediately had my red flags go up, I safely pulled off the roadway and opened the hood and the fumes got stronger and stronger, I removed the plastic top engine cover to discover the foam on the underside of the plastic cover was sopping wet with gasoline, and witnessed what appears to be some sort of line or horse carrying fuel to the high pressure fuel pump squirting out gasoline right on to the hot manifold which immediately panicked me and i put tue plastic engine cover back over the top of the squirting fuel line. It comes directly off of the front of the fuel pump with a quick connect plastic hose that seems to have become brittle from the constant heat cool cycles of the engine compartment. I immediately unplugged the car battery negative and was able to gather some disposable towels I had handy in the trunk and was able to place them atop the squirting fuel line and below it as well. But the entire area that houses the spark plugs was full of gasoline and far too much fuel for me to mop up with the towels I had on hand. This is very concerning to me that a plastic hose and connector would be used in such a scenario seeing as how common sense would tell you that over time plastic will become brittle especially with a heating cooling cycle, and I find it even more disturbing that upon contacting the dealership that I was informed that my vehicle was not included in the said faulty fuel line which has led to dangerous thermal events ending in complete loss of vehicle and potential for life loss. So in addition to the now faulty replacement engine that is in my vehicle, along with the non functioning turbo system, and the melted tail light housings, I now have to pay out of pocket to correct a mistake of Hyundai, I have lost total faith in the brand and in my particular vehicle. I do not feel safe driving it and it will sit

My battery has died twice, so dead that I can’t even unlock to car with the remote. The first time I had it jumped and took it to the dealership where they were unable to find anything wrong with it and they told me if it happened again to have it towed in so they could diagnose it while the battery was dead. So that happened again and I had it towed in to the dealership in early April. It’s now July and they still have my car and don’t have a diagnosis yet. They have had their field engineers out to run all sorts of tests, but nothing yet. Today they told me they have 3 Sonata hybrids there with the same issue as mine.

On June 30, 2024 I was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata and the car caught on fire. There were no warning lights/ dash indicators/ no check engine lights or other warnings present. I had just exited the highway and while sitting at a light, smoke began emanating from the hood and within seconds the smoke turned dark brown at the vents near the windshield. I immediately exited out of the vehicle. I did not have time to pull over out of traffic. The car was engulfed in flames within a very short period of time. I had only seconds to exit the car. I would have struggled to get any passengers out of the backseat safely (i.e. kids in car seats) had I not been the only one in the car at the time. We had notified Hyundai of engine concerns that began in 2023, and they had given us the runaround for many months requiring us to submit paperwork for oil changes for the lifetime of the car and to keep returning to the dealership for "testing" after driving a certain # of miles. They required us to bring the car in to have pictures of the engine taken to ensure there wasn't "neglect" to the car on our part. This excessive and lengthy process by Hyundai took several months after initial concerns were brought up with the dealer. After being required to submit voluminous amount of paperwork and several trips to the dealership for "testing", Hyundai finally agreed to replace the faulty engine. We were told we could continue to drive it until a new engine was ordered. The new engine was scheduled to be replaced on July 11, 2024 however, the car burst into flames on June 30, 2024. Had Hyundai taken appropriate action when the issue was first brought to their attention, this incident would have likely been avoided and had not endangered my life and others helping. Thank you for your attention to this incident.

This car looses oil continuously. I put a quart of oil in it every week. Due to this oil leaking into the engine I have had many costly repairs to replace spark plugs, coil packs, air sensor and throttle. In the winter the coolant needs replaced weekly and no idea where that is being used at. Now again the car must go back to dealership for repairs for rough idle and loosing power while driving.

With a front seat passenger, using the autos seat belt, at the height of 5’ 6” and a 145lbs. The airbag off light will come on, indicating the airbag system has been turned off. This is intermittent and at times the issue can be resolved with pulling the vehicle over. Turning the engine off, asking the passenger to step out of the vehicle (at times on the shoulder of a major interstate), closing the front passenger door. To then reopen the car door, set again in the front passenger seat, secure seat belt and the driver starts the car. Sometimes this will cause the light to go off, indicating the airbag system is on. However, this does NOT always work. During a normal transit the airbag will randomly come on and off.
