Intermittent issue. On startup, the hvac system cycles through the modes and gets stuck blowing on mixed mode (face and feet) regardless of what mode is selected. The problem is temporarily fixed by manually tapping the mode button until the desired mode is selected.

Updated NHTSA Complaint DraftVehicle Information: 2014 Hyundai SonataVIN: [XXX] Incident Date: XXX Description of Safety Defect:While driving on XXX, the vehicle's engine experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure and completely shut off without warning, causing an immediate loss of motive power. This sudden engine stall created an extreme, hazardous traffic safety risk.A subsequent professional inspection revealed that the vehicle's odometer had been illegally rolled back and tampered with by the selling dealership (Johny's Auto Center in 120 bleu hill ave Roxbury, MA) 02119 prior to purchase. The true, undocumented mileage of the engine is significantly higher than indicated, directly causing this sudden component failure. I am reporting this incident both as a critical vehicle safety defect and as a case of illegal odometer fraud. The incident began following a routine maintenance visit on March 16, 2026, and has been a continuous, ongoing safety hazard every single day since. While the vehicle was in for routine brake service and an oil change, the dealership automatically applied an open, manufacturer-mandated ECU S/W Update THETA II (26-01-013H-1) under Service Campaign 9C2 Emissions (Code NP001-SC9C2) without my prior knowledge of its drivability side effects. This software flash directly compromised the vehicle's powertrain logic, creating two notable, daily safety failures. First, within the first 5 minutes of engine startup, and most pronounced on every cold engine startup, the throttle delivery is highly erratic, causing uncommanded low-speed surging. In a specific incident in a parking lot following a cold start, I accelerated to approximately 15 MPH and completely removed my foot from the accelerator pedal to coast. Instead of slowing down, the vehicle unexpectedly lunged and pulled ahead forcefully against my intent. Second, even after reaching full operating temperature, the vehicle completely loses safe and predictable engine braking at greater speeds; when lifting off the gas pedal, engine RPMs aggressively drop, causing the vehicle to coast freely as if in neutral. Re-applying the accelerator causes a violent "phantom shifting" downshift and a hard transmission lockup. My safety and the safety of others are put at risk every time the vehicle is driven. The low-speed throttle surging creates an ongoing risk of hitting pedestrians or cross-traffic, while the permanent loss of predictable engine braking drastically extends stopping distances. No warning lamps or diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) appeared prior to or during these continuous failures. The vehicle remains available for inspection.

Once again I am having to replace a bulb for my vehicle. This will be the second time in 3 months I have had to replace my rear blinker bulb. Not including the 4-5 times per year I have to replace headlight bulbs. This time the wiring has melted and the bulb has nearly melted the lens cover. I only buy the exact OEM recommended bulb every time. Nothing fancy. Just the basic old school bulbs. Every year model around mine has been recalled for this exact issue.

- #11746557June 25, 2026ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Randomly all controls on my steering wheel (I.e. cruise control, volume for sound, Bluetooth phone controls etc) just stopped working. Now I cannot control the radio, phone or even toggle to see mpg, mileage driven, use cruise control etc. I read there was an extended warranty regarding this issue and my vehicle was or is affected. However it has since expired and upon contacting local dealership they did not even have the parts for that recall.

On Feb. 10, 2026, my Sonata began showing a blue screen on the infotainment screen when the vehicle was in reverse. The blue screen contained the message "Incoming Camera Signal Error. Please try again later." Between Feb. 10 and 22, I continued seeing the aforementioned blue screen and message. In addition, I began seeing a green screen with a message "No Camera Signal Received. Please try again later.”. On Feb. 22, I was attempting to reverse from my garage and my camera failed to engage. I saw a black screen without picture when the car was first put in reverse, so I put in park and then switch back to reverse. The camera did not engage and the screen remained on the car's menu. Camera then flashed on briefly and then went back to the black screen, then moved multiple time between to the blue screen with the warning message “Incoming Camera Signal Error. Please Try Again Later.” and the green screen with message “No Camera Signal Received. Please try again later.” The issue eventually began occurring both while in reverse and in drive. During this time frame, I took the vehicle to the dealership on multiple occasions, Feb. 10 and Feb. 19, and they were unable to replicate the challenge. I took the vehicle back to the dealer on Feb. 23, and the issue was replicated. The issue was 'repaired' and picked up on Mar. 19, but had to return 3 hours later due to the same issue then in an exacerbated state. The issue was finally repaired on Apr. 1 after a complete floor assembly replacement. The issues caused the safety concern of limited visibility when driving.

- #11746137June 24, 2026ENGINE, FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
At approximately 130,000 miles, vehicle developed and internal coolant leak caused by a failed Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) in the center muffler assembly, matching TSB 23-EM-009H - a known manufacturing defect documented by Hyundai. Coolant has been slowly leaking internally into the exhaust system. The authorized Hyundai dealership initially failed to diagnose the internal leak and told me there was no leak and wanted to send me home. After pushing back, the internal leak was confirmed. If not caught, this defect could result in engine overheating or complete engine failure without warning. Hyundai Motor America has denied goodwill coverage despite this being a documented manufacturing defect.

- #11746007June 23, 2026TIRES
When backing into my parking spot the front driver side tire blew at the side wall. Then a few weeks late the Rear driver side tire started to bubble at the same spot and was showing signs that it was getting ready to blow. The first one was immediately replaced under Kumho's warranty and then the second one was replaced on my dime. I feel that the other 2 tires could blow at anytime as the car only has 2800 miles on it and has not been involved in any significant impact or accident.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed with the family inside the vehicle, a strong gasoline odor was inside the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stated that the fuel gauge was lowering quickly. Upon exiting the vehicle, the contact became aware of gasoline gushing heavily out of the vehicle onto the ground. Two months prior to the failure, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer due to an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V796000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the recall repair was not performed because the part for the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was determined that the gas valve was not properly fixed. The abnormal sound in the rear of the vehicle was due to the fuel expansion, which caused the tank to rupture and melt. The melting caused the fuel pump to expand and melt, causing structural damage to the body of the vehicle. The structural expansion caused the rear passenger seats to raise up. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,000.

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE, equipped with the Theta II 2.4L GDI engine, is experiencing severe powertrain failures including rhythmic metallic engine knocking, catastrophic oil consumption, and un-commanded surges/jumping in speed while driving. These symptoms manifested following an unauthorized engine replacement performed by Hyundai of El Cajon under Repair Order [XXX], where the dealer covertly outsourced my vehicle to a third-party shop (Legacy Motor Works) to install an unverified used salvage engine block rather than a certified factory assembly. This vehicle is a Class Vehicle under In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation (Case No. [XXX]), and the KSDS software update (Campaign 953) was successfully completed on my vehicle in 2019. The engine knock, surging, and oil consumption are consistent with the known connecting rod bearing failure defect described in NHTSA investigation PE17-007. The dealership is currently denying warranty coverage, citing a mileage limit that does not exist under my Lifetime Powertrain Warranty, and they are withholding physical documentation of the repair terms. The vehicle is also experiencing secondary safety failures, including a continuous airbag SRS warning light (two years) and electrical shorts caused by the salvage-yard alternator installation, which have destroyed 4 to 5 car batteries. This engine failure represents a significant safety hazard, as the vehicle periodically loses power and surges without driver input. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this pattern of warranty denial, parts-sourcing fraud, and the safety risks posed by this substandard engine installation. I purchased this vehicle pre-owned approximately two years ago and have since developed concerns about its reliability, particularly related to the electrical and hybrid systems. In hindsight, I suspect these issues may be part of the reason the original owner traded it in to a CarMax dealer. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I began experiencing recurring problems with the 12V battery, including frequent instances requiring battery resets. Interestingly, these issues were significantly less frequent during colder weather. More recently, as temperatures have increased, the problem has worsened considerably. For about the past month, the vehicle loses power and dies immediately after each drive once the ignition is turned off. This situation escalated yesterday when the “Check Hybrid System” warning light signalled while I was driving on a busy road. I had not encountered this warning before, but after researching the issue, I discovered that other Hyundai hybrid owners have reported similar problems. In some cases, these issues have led to dangerous situations, including vehicles shutting off unexpectedly while driving at highway speeds. While I cannot determine the extent of this issue across all Hyundai hybrid vehicles, the frequency of similar reports suggests a systemic defect affecting at least a subset of Hyundai Sonata Hybrid models. Regardless of scale, these battery issues present a significant inconvenience and a serious potential safety concern. I am requesting a formal review of this issue and guidance on potential remedies or corrective action.
