This interaction causes sulfur deposits to form on the contact points of the three fuel sending units located inside the fuel tank. These deposits interfere with the accurate operation of the fuel gauge, potentially causing the "fuel gauge to read full while the fuel tank may not in fact be full or could be empty."

The primary component affected is the "FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY," specifically the fuel level sending units within it.

Manufacturer's Remedy

To address the issue, Audi dealers will remove the existing fuel level sending units. These will be replaced with new fuel level sending units that utilize a special alloy composed of gold, silver, and a small amount of nickel. This new alloy is designed to be resistant to chemical reactions with sulfur, preventing future deposit formation and ensuring accurate fuel gauge readings.

Audi will also contact owners whose vehicles were previously repaired under an earlier recall (NHTSA 00V137 / Audi LB) to ensure they receive the updated fuel sending units. The repair will be performed free of charge.
