2023 Kia Sportage AVNT Screen Flickering TSB

Symptoms

Owners of affected 2023 Kia Sportage (NQ5a) vehicles, produced from August 5, 2021, through May 25, 2023, may experience the Audio Video Navigation Telematics (AVNT) screen flickering 'ON/OFF'. This symptom indicates an intermittent connection issue with the head unit display.

Diagnosis / Trigger Conditions

The primary cause of the Kia Sportage AVNT screen flickering is an intermittent contact between the coaxial cable connector and the AVNT head unit. This connection issue leads to the display turning on and off sporadically, impacting the functionality of the AVNT system. The Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) provides a direct repair procedure to address this specific fault.

Repair Procedure Summary

The repair procedure involves replacing the AVNT head unit coaxial cable. Technicians will begin by removing the instrument cluster, following the steps outlined in the KGIS Shop Manual for "Body Electrical System → Indicators and Gauges → Cluster → Removal and Installation." Next, the AVNT head unit is removed by loosening its four retaining screws. A crucial caution is to place a clean cloth or fender liner under the AVNT head unit to prevent any scratching or damage to its surface.

The existing coaxial cable connector (C) is then disconnected from the AVNT head unit. Using a wiring cutter, the end of the removed coaxial cable and connector is cut off and disposed of. It's important to note that only the coaxial cable connector needs to be disconnected at this stage. The cut end of the coaxial cable (D) is then wrapped with Tesa® tape and secured to the main harness.

A new coaxial cable is then installed. The new coaxial cable connector (C) is connected to the back of the AVNT head unit (B). The new coaxial cable (D) is routed along the main harness inside the dash area and secured with three zip-ties. Using a pin removal tool, the yellow tab of the navigation monitor connector (M22) (F) is unlocked. The coaxial pin 5 (G) is separated from connector (F) using the pin removal tool, ensuring the tool is inserted in the correct orientation. The exposed pin is wrapped with Tesa® tape, but the pin itself does not need to be cut. Finally, the new coaxial cable pin (G) is inserted into pin 5 of the navigation monitor connector (M22) (F), and the locking tab is engaged. All removed parts are then reinstalled in reverse order, and normal operation of the AVNT system is confirmed.
