Repair Procedure Summary

BMW technicians will follow a specific procedure to update the head unit software. The process begins by determining the vehicle's current I-level using diagnostic applications like AIR or AWP. The goal is to update the vehicle to I-level 24-11-530 or higher.

The preferred method for this update is a Remote Software Update (RSU) to software version 11/2024.30 or higher. If the RSU software is already downloaded to the vehicle, the owner may be prompted to install it. The installation process typically requires the vehicle to be stationary. After approximately 30 minutes, the technician will verify successful installation of RSU software version 11/2024.30 or higher.

If the RSU software is not available or is an older version, programming will be performed via ISTA. This involves updating the vehicle to I-level 24-11-530 or higher using ISTA 4.50.3x or a newer version. Before programming, the technician will read the fault memory. If the vehicle's I-level is already at the target version or higher, programming is not performed, and standard diagnosis continues. For vehicles with an I-level lower than 24-11-530, the programming process includes connecting a battery charger and the ISTA 4 programming system, determining and working through a measures plan, and performing a vehicle test.

Important Warnings

• If a customer has already downloaded the required RSU software into the vehicle but has NOT YET installed it, programming must be carried out via RSU as described in Step 1 of the procedure.
• If the vehicle's I-level is already at 24-11-530 or a more recent version, technicians are instructed to not program the vehicle and instead continue with standard diagnosis.
• During any programming via ISTA, it is critical to always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (refer to SI B04 23 10) to maintain stable voltage.
• If "Check Control messages (CCM)" are displayed after a successful installation, the vehicle should be allowed to go to sleep before rechecking the I-level.

Technicians will utilize specific tools and software for this update:

• ISTA 4.50.3x or higher: This diagnostic and programming software is essential for updating the vehicle's I-level if RSU is not applicable.
