2021-2022 Audi e-tron Rearview Camera Washer Malfunction

This bulletin supersedes Group 92 number 20-26, originally published on April 10, 2020, with revisions including expanded model year coverage and updated service procedures.

Symptoms

Owners of affected Audi e-tron models may experience difficulty with the "clean rearview camera" function. When activated, the rearview camera washer may fail to spray solvent immediately. It often requires activating the function several times before any solvent is sprayed, leading to frustration and reduced visibility.

Technical Background

The root cause of this issue is the absence of a check valve in the washer solvent circuit that supplies the rearview camera washer jet. Without this valve, the delivery tube for the solvent loses its prime during driving or when the rear lid is opened. The system is designed to cancel additional wash cycles after four activations to conserve solvent.

However, these four activations are insufficient to fill and pressurize the washer solvent circuit, meaning the rearview camera cannot be cleaned effectively until the KL15 circuit (ignition key cycle) is reset. Audi has implemented a change in the washer pump type in production to address this issue in newer vehicles.
