- #11518799April 24, 2023UNKNOWN OR OTHER, BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING
Poor image quality of backup camera. Very grainy and sometimes dark image makes it difficult to see what’s behind you when backing up. A small child or pet could easily be missed when backing up due to this poor image quality. This is an accident waiting to happen. Prior model years and noticeably better image quality

4runner windshield makes a loud snapping, metal on glass crunching/tapping sound when temperature drop and is very distracting. The dealership heard it some the first visit and placed limited tape on the edge of the cowl lip facing the engine.sound got louder and drowned out the radio. On the second visit it had warmed some. Dealership did not inspect the windshield seal or check for loose components under the cowl as suggested.

- #11514122March 28, 2023SEAT BELTS
On 2/21/2023, my parents jumped into the backseat of my parked car and began putting on their seatbelts. They were met with resistance and were unable to retract their seatbelts. This was very arcane because I seldom have any backseat passengers and I don't load any heavy cargo into my car. Moreover, I went into my backseat and retracted the rear seatbelts, except for the middle backseat, slowly enough to expose the part of the belt webbing that was torn. On both sides of my rear seatbelts, the webbing of the belts is torn. This is perplexing because I never utilize my rear seatbelts, I don't load any type of heavy cargo that would put pressure on the seatbelts, and my car is brand new. I bought my brand new 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro on 9/23/22. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. I first noticed the problem on 2/21/23. My safety and the safety of others were at risk because my capricious rear seatbelts could have malfunctioned at any given moment. I'm thankful that I discovered the insidious problem while parked in my driveway. I have contacted my local dealership at Longo Toyota in El Monte, CA about this safety issue and they don't know anything about this problem being reproduced or confirmed. I have not had my vehicle inspected by a Toyota Dealership because they quoted me $175 for inspection and consultation, which I thought was an avaricious price. Also, I work 12-hour shifts as a Registered Nurse in the Cardiac ICU and it's difficult to arrange an appointment because of my work schedule. I believe this is a manufacturer's issue. I believe that the seat belts were manufactured with an incorrect component, which caused the seat belts to "bunch" and eventually lead to the tearing of the seat belts' webbing. Very similar to this prior safety recall on Toyota Siennas. https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-is-conducting-a-safety-recall-involving-certain-toyota-vehicles-6/ Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

The contact owns a 2022 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed on the freeway, the vehicle lost motive power. The 4WD error and various other unknown warning lights and messages were illuminated. The contact managed to pull over and stated that smoke was seen coming from underneath the hood and that once he opened the hood, there were flames coming from the airbox, and he pulled out the air filter. The contact stated that he managed to extinguish the fire. The fire department arrived after the fire was extinguished, and there was no report completed. The vehicle was then towed to a local dealer; however, the mechanic made the contact aware that the manufacturer would send out an inspector. The inspector made the contact aware of a faulty unknown sensor; however, the vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting further diagnosis and repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 47,000.

Nov. 10 Trailer light connection on vehicle would not stay connected. I got under car to make connection using tape to keep the flap from coming down and pulling connection loose. Drove to Yazoo City to deliver lawn mower and on return the connection had come loose again. Nov.14 went to Jackson Toyota for help. Asked help from my salesman. He sent me to service where I asked 3 service people for help. Finally, after I got extremely upset at the overall lack of knowledge as to where this connection is or how it works, I was sent to Ricks Pro Trucks in Gluckstat, Ms where I got help. My trailer had recently been rewired so it was not at fault like dealership suggested. I got down to check another vehicle like mine and it had the same impossible connection. I must have lights to legally pull my trailer on the highway. I believe the design and placement of this part on these vehicles is faulty thus making this an on road danger for this particular model vehicle.

- #11494264November 19, 2022TIRES
Yokohama 245/60r20 Geolander G96 that came with my brand new 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited I purchased in December 2020. Over the last several weeks every 7 to 10 days I have needed to put air in all 4 tires. Then I was driving on a smooth paved street arriving at work my low pressure warning light came on. I got out and had a flat tire. I found the inner sidewall failed at only 28,000 miles. I didn’t hit anything on the road, or hit a curb etc. just normal driving on paved roads. Putting on the spare I took my 4Runner to the Toyota dealership a few miles away. The service technician at our local Toyota dealer today stated they, “are seeing this issue as a common problem with this particular tire on Toyota 4Runners in our Colorado Cold climate, is causing the rubber to become excessively brittle. Even with normal use, the smallest stones/sand used in our highway plows/sanding trucks cause catastrophic premature tire failure. They may be fine for use in California warm clients but not here in Colorado.” This explains why recently every 7 to 10 days I have needed to put additional air in all 4 tires. The rubber is prematurely becoming brittle/rot in cold weather thus not properly sealing the air. The technician recommended going with 4 new tires from a different manufacturer, stating the problem will continue with the other 3 Yokohama tires and likely a new Yokohama tire as well. He agreed the tire should be recalled as this is unacceptable especially for a tire with a M+S (mud and snow rating), only 28,000 miles on and properly taken care of. At $400+ per tire this is a huge expense and clearly a HUGE safety issue in cold climates. In cold weather having to refill tires with air every 7 to 10 days is a real hassle as well. Good thing I have my own air compressor at home. I only drive with the correct air pressure per my owners manual as stated on my drivers door. The Toyota dealer drew a white chalk square around the tire failure area.

I was hit in drivers side by a vehicle that ran a red light, going approx 40 mph. The force of the collision pushed me into another vehicle. My car was new in March, had 7100 miles on it, and none of the airbags deployed, sidecurtain or steering wheel. I suffered a concussion and severe bruising.

- #11481939August 30, 2022STEERING, SUSPENSION, WHEELS
Bought the vehicle brand new and have been dealing with a steering wheel/vehicle shake ever since. The vehicle feels out of control around 55-65mph(like death wobble) and the ride is rough at any speed over 50mph. This has been a serious issue on the highway with instances of crossing lanes because of lack of control over steering. No warning lights have ever come on. Been to the dealership many times complaining about the issue just to be told that the "problem can't be replicated". I have taken it to several tire shops as well to have the wheels/tires balanced but nothing seems to help. I even bought new wheels and tires just to see if this was the cause and still no solution. This is a serious problem that thousands of 4Runner owners are experiencing and Toyota needs to get to the bottom of this. This absolutely should not be happening on brand new/modern day vehicles. I believe this is a multivariate issue causing the shake - a mix between wheel/tire balance, steering column, and possibly the drive shaft/differential/CV components. The problem must be big if Toyota continues to deny the problem year after year after year.

- #11479578August 16, 2022SERVICE BRAKES, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING
On numerous occasions, while driving in a straight line with our adaptive cruise control on, our 2022 Toyota 4Runner will automatically actuate the vehicle's brakes when approaching a slower or stationary vehicle that is either to the left or right, but not directly in front of our vehicle. This sudden speed reduction has almost caused any following vehicles to almost collide with the back of our 4Runner. It has happened to us at speeds between 30 MPH and 65 MPH. When it happens, one has to quickly tap the brakes to deactivate the adaptive cruise control then get on the accelerator pedal to avoid a collision with any following vehicle. We have taken our 4Runner into two separate Toyota dealerships on three separate occasions to have this problem diagnosed and repaired. The first dealership told us repeatedly that there is no issue. The second dealership pulled data from our vehicle and made an adjustment to the 4Runner's forward camera system. Unfortunately, the day after this adjustment was made our 4Runner irrationally applied the brakes when we were driving 35 MPH on a straight road with no other vehicle in front of us. The problem is not fixed. We are now waiting for a response from Toyota Corporate.

During daytime driving and the sun is over head the glare on the instrument panel is so bad I am unable to view any of the gages. I have to drive with my hand over the dash to block the glare so my speed etc is visible. I can’t tint the entire front window which is what I feel like I would have to do to stop the problem.

Driving up to 60mph the steering wheel vibrates excessively. I have taken it to the dealer and got repairs to fix it but 2 days later it returned. I had wheels balanced and rotated with an alignment. I fear I will loose control of the suv soon.

I purchased a 2022 Toyota 4RUNNER and 9 days later the wiring harness was destroyed by rodents most like squirrels. Toyota switched to soy based wire insulation without taking precautions in the design to protect the wiring from rodents attracted to the insulation material. The resulting damage cost $8000 to repair and it will take months for the harness to be in stock. This failure caused all safety features to be disabled leaving the vehicle without standard safety functions.
