Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2022 Niro and 2018-2022 Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Fluid may leak into the printed circuit board inside the hydraulic clutch actuator, which can result in an engine compartment fire.
My 2019 Kia Niro EV, with approximately 75,000 miles, continuously displays a “Refill inverter coolant” warning. While driving, the vehicle intermittently displays the turtle-shaped reduced-power warning and experiences a significant loss of acceleration. The vehicle does not respond normally to accelerator input. The condition sometimes clears after a period of driving, but when traveling uphill, the warning and reduced acceleration persist. This creates a serious safety concern because the vehicle may be unable to maintain speed or accelerate sufficiently on hills or when merging into traffic. The vehicle has been at an authorized Kia dealership for approximately seven days. The dealership has not yet identified the cause and has reportedly contacted Kia corporate technical support. The dealer has also indicated that another vehicle has presented with a similar issue. I am requesting an investigation into the potential coolant-circulation or thermal-management defect and its relationship to unexpected propulsion-power reduction.

I am filing this complaint regarding my 2020 Kia Niro EV because of recurring inverter coolant warnings, a coolant restriction documented by a Kia dealership, and a subsequent repair estimate exceeding $12,000 that includes the Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU). Vehicle information Year/Make/Model: 2020 Kia Niro EV VIN: [XXX] Kia Customer Care Case: XXX Kia Techline Case: XXX After purchasing this used vehicle, I experienced a recurring “Refill Inverter Coolant” warning. On XXX AutoStream Reisterstown performed an inverter coolant fluid exchange. I paid $376.41 for this service. The warning returned, and I subsequently took the vehicle to Buchanan Kia. On XXX the Kia dealership documented the following in its repair order: “Coolant is congealed and is restricting cooling system causing system to think coolant level is low.” The dealership flushed and bled the cooling system, and its documentation stated that no codes were found. However, the warning returned within days. The vehicle then remained at the dealership for further evaluation. Kia subsequently prepared a repair estimate totaling $12,030.52. The estimate includes the EPCU assembly, part number 36601-0E190, as well as the onboard charger and multiple cooling-system components. I am concerned about the cause of the coolant restriction, the recurrence of the warning after service, and whether the EPCU condition in my vehicle is related to Safety Recall SC258. I have not received a definitive written explanation establishing the cause of the failure or confirming the applicable recall coverage. My vehicle has been unavailable to me for an extended period, and despite repeated contacts with Kia Customer Care, I have not received a definitive resolution. I respectfully request that NHTSA review this complaint for a potential vehicle safety defect, including any relationship between the reported coolant condition and the EPCU assembly identified in the repair INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On August 22nd, I was driving from the grocery story to my house (5 miles away) when the transmission started failing only going on 2nd gear and the check engine light came on, when I got home, I called my mechanic and he connected his code reader to my card and the error code is P090B$07E9 Clutch "B" actuator control circuit performance error, he told me that Kia motors had an open recall for the clutch actuator, I called the Kia dealer to make an appointment for August 26th I told them the issue with my car and they told me they will check that error, it took two weeks for them to return my car and they told me that they replaced only the fuse for the Recall SC275 / NHTSA 23V534000 and they told me that I needed a new transmission and the price to replace it was $6,000.00 plus tax, I told them that the issue it was because the clutch actuator, they said no, so I took my car home, and took it for a second opinion with an independent service center, after the inspection they told me that the transmission failed and it was stuck on the 2nd gear and it was better to replace the transmission, I went back to the Kia dealer ship and demand a formal diagnostic report explicitly stating whether the Hydraulic Clutch Actuator (HCA) has leaked fluid onto the printed circuit board. But they refused to re-inspect the car, I told them if they can open a goodwill claim with Kia corporation and they said no, I called Kia corporation and explained the situation, after 30 minutes on the call with a service representative they told me that they goodwill claim was denied because I had no proof the issues was related to the Clutch Actuator, I told them I have owned the car for almost 3 years and they never send me letters of the recalls related to my car and I didn't know they have several recalls on this car that was never fixed. I am just frustrated that my car is broken and I need to pay over $6,000.00 for a new transmission.

2019 Kia Niro. While driving normally on the street, the driver attempted to brake & the brakes would not respond. This is a very scary situation and Kia needs to handle immediately!! The message "Stop the Vehicle and Check Regenerative Brakes" was displayed. Thankfully the driver was able to come to a stop without crashing but if this was during heavy traffic time it definitely would've resulted in a crash. Could be even that much worse on the freeway, especially in Los Angeles. The vehicle was towed to the drivers home. After checking again, the vehicle was in limp mode & would not go over 15mph. The driver was able to get it to a Kia shop to be checked & they quoted a $9,000 repair!! This is horrible that Kia is allowing this issue to go on!!!

The contact owns a 2019 Kia Niro. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop as needed. The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway and the parking brake was engaged to keep the vehicle from moving. The message "Stop the Vehicle and Check Regenerative Brakes" was displayed. The failure was a recurring failure. The vehicle was towed, and the dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
