2026 BMW GS Trophy Kicks Off in Romanian Carpathians

The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2026 officially began yesterday, September 14, in the Carpathian mountains of Romania. This tenth edition of the global adventure motorcycling event gathers 30 riders from 13 nations, forming 13 international teams, for six days of challenging off-road and on-road riding. Participants will navigate approximately 1,500 kilometers of rugged Transylvanian terrain on the latest BMW R 12 G/S competition motorcycles.

Event Format and Challenges

The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy is structured as an adventure challenge rather than a speed competition. Success is measured by precise riding, sound judgment, endurance, and collaborative teamwork. Riders are expected to support each other, solve practical and intellectual problems, and demonstrate camaraderie, which are core values of the international GS community.

The event's motto, 'Back to Basics,' emphasizes demanding rides through mountain and forest terrain. Over the six days, approximately half of the 1,500-kilometer route will be off paved roads, including steep sections, rugged mountain trails, and dense forest tracks. Daily challenges are designed to test riding skills, practical problem-solving, and mental fortitude—qualities essential for adventure riders in remote regions.

The Romanian landscape provides a natural wilderness backdrop, featuring dense forests, gravel roads, river crossings, and significant mountainous ascents and descents. This environment is intended to highlight the on- and off-road capabilities of the BMW R 12 G/S motorcycles provided to all competitors.

Participants and Preparation

This year's BMW GS Trophy 2026 Romania features 13 international teams, comprising 30 riders who qualified through national or regional events. Eight of these teams consist of three male riders each, while five are two-person female teams, representing 13 different countries.

Prior to the start, participants completed necessary registration and medical checks. They also underwent individual fittings for their protective and riding equipment. Each rider received a personalized BMW R 12 G/S motorcycle, equipped with SENA communication systems, after an initial welcome dinner and team introductions.

The diverse group of riders includes individuals from various backgrounds, such as automotive technicians, full-time travelers, soldiers, motorcycle instructors, firefighters, and engineers. Many share a long-standing passion for motorcycling and adventure riding, with some having previous experience in similar events or deep connections to the BMW Motorrad community.

The Romanian Setting

The event is based near the village of Colțești, in the Transylvanian region of Romania. Competitors are surrounded by a natural wilderness landscape, overlooked by a 13th-century clifftop fortress. The Carpathian mountains encircle the area, which is known for being one of Europe’s few undisturbed natural forests, home to wildlife such as grey wolves and brown bears.

Romania, as the host country, offers a rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. The organizers aim to provide an authentic experience of the region, distinct from popular fantasy imagery. The challenging topography of the region, including winding asphalt roads, also demands maximum concentration from the riders.
