BMW Group unveiled three world premieres at Auto China 2026: the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, the BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, and the new BMW 7 Series. These introductions highlight the company's focus on its Neue Klasse architecture, integrating advanced technologies and design elements across its future vehicle lineup. The event also showcased digital experiences and driver assistance systems developed specifically for the Chinese market.

New Electric Models for China

The BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase and BMW i3 Long Wheelbase made their global debuts as the first Neue Klasse models designed and developed in China for the local market. Both electric vehicles feature BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, which utilizes cylindrical cell high-voltage batteries. The new iX3 offers a range exceeding 900 kilometers on a single charge, while the i3 achieves over 1,000 kilometers, both measured under the CLTC cycle.

These models incorporate an 800-volt architecture, enabling fast charging capabilities. They can achieve a peak charging power of 400 kW, allowing for an additional 400 kilometers of range in just ten minutes, according to CLTC standards. Their design reflects a new era for BMW, combining traditional proportions with a more technical aesthetic, including a reinterpreted kidney grille and integrated light signatures.

The New BMW 7 Series and Neue Klasse Integration

The new BMW 7 Series also premiered, representing the most extensive model revision in the brand's history and marking the first time Neue Klasse technologies are integrated into an existing model line. This luxury sedan serves as a platform to scale new technology clusters and design language across BMW's portfolio. Its exterior features a monolithic design, the new BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, and minimalist crystal headlights.

Inside, the 7 Series combines luxurious materials like leather, wood, and crystal glass with advanced digital features. Highlights include the new BMW Panoramic iDrive and the BMW Passenger Screen, alongside an enhanced BMW Theatre Screen for rear occupants. The vehicle also boasts upgraded Level 2 driver assistance systems, offering hands-free driving up to 130 km/h on motorways in various markets, including Europe, the United States, and Canada. A new "Address-to-Address" driver assistance system, specifically adapted for Chinese traffic conditions, will roll out to 12 BMW models in China by the end of 2027, starting with the iX3.

Digital Innovation and Future Technologies

BMW's presence at Auto China 2026 emphasized its digital strategy, particularly for the Chinese market. The BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by BMW Operating System X, features a scalable architecture that allows for global core functions while adapting content and services to local needs. In China, this includes a proprietary voice interaction solution developed with local partners like DeepSeek, contrasting with Amazon technologies used elsewhere. Approximately 70 percent of the Chinese version of Operating System X is developed in local centers, leveraging collaborations with companies such as Alibaba, Amap, and Huawei.

Beyond the core models, BMW showcased additional technological advancements. The BMW iX3 Flow Edition concept car demonstrated the production readiness of BMW E Ink technology, integrated into the bonnet to display eight selectable animations. The company also presented a redesigned BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype, part of a global pilot fleet since 2023, with series production of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle planned for 2028. MINI also displayed concept cars, including the MINI x Vagabund and MINI JCW "The Skeg."

For current and prospective BMW owners, these announcements signal a significant shift towards electrification, advanced digital integration, and market-specific vehicle development. The introduction of Neue Klasse technologies across both new and existing models indicates BMW's strategic direction for its future product offerings, particularly in key markets like China.
