BMW has issued a critical Delivery Stop, SIB 32 09 25, for affected vehicles. This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 2) replaces SI B32 09 25 dated October 2025. This means:

• "Do not deliver to a customer, a New, Certified Pre-Owned or Used vehicle subject to a Delivery Stop, until the vehicle is repaired."
• "Do not use or sell replacement equipment/parts subject to a Delivery Stop."

This measure ensures that all vehicles are safe and fully functional before reaching customers. Dealers are instructed to check their inventory for affected vehicles and complete the necessary repairs before customer delivery. If a customer has already taken delivery, the procedure should be performed the next time the vehicle is in the shop, provided the campaigns have a status of remedy available.

Symptoms of the BMW X3 Steering Gear Fault

Owners of affected 2025 BMW X3 vehicles may notice a BMW X3 steering gear fault through specific indicators. The primary symptom is a "Check Control message" appearing in the instrument cluster. Additionally, drivers may experience a "significant change in steering feel," indicating a potential issue with the steering system's responsiveness or feedback.

Cause of the Steering Gear Fault

The root cause of this BMW X3 steering gear fault has been identified as a faulty torque sensor. Specifically, one of the two torque sensors responsible for detecting the driver's steering request could be faulty. This malfunction directly impacts the vehicle's ability to accurately interpret and respond to steering inputs.

Detailed Repair Procedure

The correction for the BMW X3 steering gear fault involves replacing the entire steering gear assembly. This procedure is performed according to BMW's repair instruction REP32 13 572, titled “Replace electrical steering box (EPS)”.

For vehicles equipped with a B48 engine, technicians only need to remove and install the track rod on the right side to access and remove the steering gear. The procedure remains unchanged for vehicles with a B58 engine. After the steering gear replacement, the vehicle's control units must be programmed and encoded. This process automatically reprograms any vehicle control modules that do not have the latest software I-level. Technicians must select the relevant Technical Campaign (including 00 00 006/556, 61 21 528, and 61 00 730) to perform and submit for updating the vehicle to the required I-level or higher.

Reimbursement for this action, identified by Repair Code 0032770300 (G45 Replacing steering gear), is processed via normal claim entry. The bulletin specifies various work packages and labor operations for different scenarios:

• Work Package #1 (00 78 921 - Plusposition): Covers replacing the steering gear, programming and encoding control units, performing a vehicle test (including 00 00 5566 and 61 21 528), and adjusting front toe-in (32 00 595, 32 00 601, 32 13 905). This is for completion before first vehicle delivery or if the vehicle is already in the workshop for another reason.
• Work Package #2 (00 78 337 - Main work): Similar to Work Package #1, covering steering gear replacement, programming/encoding, vehicle test (including 00 00 006 and 61 21 528), and front toe-in adjustment (32 00 595, 32 00 601, 32 13 905). This applies when the vehicle arrives for this action and no other main work is performed.
• Work Package #3 (00 78 935 - Plusposition): For cases where programming and encoding are included in another technical action or repair, this covers steering gear replacement and front toe-in adjustment (32 00 595, 32 00 601, 32 13 905).
• Work Package #4 (00 78 346 - Main work): Similar to Work Package #3, for steering gear replacement and front toe-in adjustment when programming/encoding is handled by another technical action.

An additional work package, Expanded WP A (00 78 934), is available for adjusting the rear axle with eccentric screws, with a labor allowance of 11 FRU.

Reimbursement for repair-related bulk supply material (Sublet Code 4) is available up to $25.00. This repair also qualifies for Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement (Sublet Code 2) for vehicle owners.
