2024 BMW X1 Rattling Noise from Double Clutch Transmission

Symptoms

Owners of the 2024 BMW X1 (U11 X1 Sports Activity Vehicle) may notice a distinct "rattling/clattering" noise emanating from the engine compartment. This 2024 BMW X1 rattling/clattering noise is often most noticeable when driving past a wall with the driver's side window open, due to sound reflection.

The noise complaint can occur under several specific driving conditions:

• Constant-speed driving on rough road surfaces: This is observed within a speed range of 5 to 11 mph, typically in 1st or 2nd gear, and when the accelerator pedal is in the lower partial load range.
• Uphill driving: The noise may occur when driving off forwards in 1st gear uphill, or when driving off backwards in reverse gear uphill.
• Downhill driving: It can also be heard when driving off in 1st gear downhill, or when driving off in reverse downhill.
• Stopping on a hill: The noise might be present when driving off in 1st gear uphill or downhill, then stopping. Similarly, it can occur when driving in reverse uphill or downhill, then stopping.
• Overrun (off throttle)/traction (engine brake) and traction/overrun transitions: This includes situations where the throttle transitions from on to off, or vice versa. It's noted in the 5 to 11 mph range in 1st or 2nd gear at lower partial load, and in the 0 to 2 mph range in reverse gear at lower partial load.
• Very slow speeds (0-3 mph): The noise can be heard when driving off without pressing the accelerator pedal (with or without the brake applied) between 0 and 3 mph. It may also occur when driving at a constant speed without pressing the accelerator pedal at approximately 2 mph, or when braking the vehicle to a full standstill.

Cause

BMW has identified the root cause of the 2024 BMW X1 rattling/clattering noise as an EGS (Electronic Gearbox System) software calibration error. This software issue affects the double clutch transmission, leading to the unpleasant noises described.

Repair Procedure Summary

To correct the EGS software calibration error and eliminate the 2024 BMW X1 rattling/clattering noise, technicians must program the vehicle with updated software. This procedure involves using the ISTA diagnostic system, specifically version 4.48.1x or higher, which was released in late June 2024.

The target integration level for the software update is U006-24-07-5XX or higher. During this process, ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules in the vehicle that do not have the latest software. The repair is identified by Repair Code 2800223900, labeled as "Noise while driving, dependent on vehicle speed, double clutch gearbox DKG Unpleasant noises."

This repair, outlined in BMW Technical Service Bulletin SIB 28 03 24, is designated as "MOBILE FRIENDLY." This means it can be performed efficiently by technicians. Owners should be aware that during the programming process, a BMW-approved battery charger or power supply (as referenced in SI B04 23 10) must always be connected to the vehicle to maintain stable voltage.

It is important for owners to understand that during a workshop visit for this issue, the affected vehicle might also have other open programming and encoding Technical Campaign repairs. The programming and encoding procedure should only be invoiced once, even if multiple campaigns are addressed simultaneously.
